A disguised prototype of the showroom version of Volkswagen’s new budget-priced electric hatch has broken cover – with a more ID.3-like look than the concept unveiled earlier this year.
A camouflaged prototype of the Volkswagen ID.2 electric car has been shown to media in Europe, as the closest look yet at the showroom version due in 2025.
Plans for Volkswagen’s Polo-sized electric hatchback were unveiled in 2021 as the ID.Life concept – before poor reception from the public sent it back to the drawing board, morphing into the ID.2all show car revealed earlier this year.
Now a camouflaged prototype of the showroom model has been shown to European media – including French publication Auto Moto, and its photographer Benjamin Defay who captured these images – ahead of the Spanish-built vehicle’s showroom arrival due in late 2025.
It is planned to be one of 10 new electric models planned by Volkswagen to arrive by 2026.
The wrapped exterior shows styling closer to the current ID.3 than the original concept earlier this year, with sharper lines and reworked lights.
The bonnet opening has been moved back for production, clearly visible further up the front of the vehicle – while there are larger rear-view mirrors, and a reshaped opening in the front bumper.
The black lower portion not wrapped in camouflage these images is new, too.
Side on, the large alloy wheels match the proportions of the concept, with the electric charging port visible above the front wheel on the passenger side of the left-hand-drive car displayed.
The pillar behind the back doors shows a thicker window frame, while the crease in the body along the doors no longer kicks upwards towards the bottom of the rear passenger window.
The tail-lights, and red strip across the tailgate appear to be slimmer than before, with a lower bumper area that again appears to have been simplified compared to the March 2023 concept.
The cabin of the ID.2 follows the uncluttered layout of the concept, but with a different look to the row of buttons for critical functions below the central infotainment screen.
Volkswagen’s other ‘ID’ range of electric cars have been criticised for placing controls for basic functions – such as air-conditioning and audio volume – into touchscreen menus where they take longer to reach, and are distracting on the road.
Production of the ID.2 is due to commence in late 2025 ahead of showroom arrivals in 2026, with no confirmation on whether the car will go on sale in Australia – though VW locally has expressed interest.
A high-performance ID. GTI concept was shown in September 2023, and is due to reach production in 2027.
The ID.2 is also expected to spawn an SUV version, as an electric alternative – or replacement – to the Volkswagen T-Cross SUV.
