Next-generation Volkswagen Tiguan slated for late-2024 Australian arrival

Australian deliveries of Volkswagen’s third-generation Tiguan are expected to begin in the second half of 2024 – almost a year after its global unveiling.

The next-generation Volkswagen Tiguan SUV is due to arrive in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2024, the German car giant’s local arm has confirmed.

A spokesperson for Volkswagen Australia confirmed the first deliveries of its third-generation Tiguan are expected to arrive in the third quarter (July-September) or fourth quarter (October-December) of 2024.

The global unveiling of the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan will take place in late 2023, with European deliveries of the new-look SUV starting early next year.

Spy images from Europe have shown the new-generation model testing in Austria, taking a number of styling cues from the latest Touareg large SUV and Golf hatchback – such as a full-width LED front light bar, wide lower grille and large air intakes on its bumpers edges.

The new Tiguan is expected to be a heavy revision of the current model – running on the same chassis and powered by familiar engines – but with a longer wheelbase and larger exterior dimensions, delivering greater cabin space than its predecessor.

It is also understood the Tiguan nameplate will only be attached to five-seat variants in the model’s new generation, with reports from India claiming the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace will be renamed to Tayron.

As previously reported, severe parts shortages led to Volkswagen Australia pausing orders for all-wheel-drive (AWD) variants of the current Tiguan, though the high-performance Tiguan R is now back on sale.

The order pause has been attributed to a lack of the ‘4Motion’ AWD system used by the Tiguan 132TSI, 147TDI and 162TSI variants, which could take 14 to 16 months to clear – meaning the current-generation SUV could go out of production before orders resume.

The Australian arrival of the new-generation Tiguan could also lead to the brand’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models going on sale in local showrooms, with the company previously telling Drive the electrified variants remain on its wish list.

Volkswagen has claimed plug-in hybrid Tiguans will be able achieve up to 100km of electric-only driving range.

With 2233 sales reported between January and April 2023, the Tiguan is Volkswagen’s second-most popular model in Australia, behind the T-Roc small SUV (2410 sales) and ahead of the T-Cross (1904 sales).
