Hyundai N Vision 74 concept to go into production – report

A report out of South Korea claims the Hyundai N Vision 74 concept car will go into production – and the showroom version is due to be unveiled later this month.

A production version of the Hyundai N Vision 74 – the retro-inspired, hydrogen-powered concept car revealed last year – could be unveiled later this month, if a report from South Korea is accurate.

South Korean publication Money Today reports Hyundai is due to announce production plans for the N Vision 74 on May 27, during an event called ‘Pony Day’.

The report refers to the upcoming production car as the Pony Coupe – a name borrowed from the Hyundai Pony which was styled by iconic automotive designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, and unveiled at the 1974 Turin Motor Show.

If you think it looks familiar that’s because the same design house responsible for the Hyundai Pony coupe also styled the original Audi Quattro and the original Delorean.

While the Hyundai N Vision 74 pays homage to the original Pony coupe, the concept vehicle’s aerodynamic aids and hydrogen fuel-cell power source brought the retro design into the 21st century.

Money Today’s report does not acknowledge any particular sources or publish quotes from an anonymous insider. Nor does it detail what could power the production version of the Hyundai concept.

However, it’s likely the showroom version would not have the same daring design as the concept car – and a more conventional engine could be adopted.

The Hyundai N Vision 74 concept car (pictured) is powered by an advanced hydrogen fuel-cell, powering a 62.4kWh battery pack and two rear-mounted electric motors, developing “more than 500kW and 900Nm” combined.

While Hyundai is one of the biggest investors in hydrogen fuel-cell development, the technology has not been embraced in the same numbers as solely electric cars.

Hyundai currently produces two electric cars on its dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which is also shared with a handful of Kia and Genesis models.

Given Hyundai’s familiarity with its E-GMP electric-car architecture, the production-ready N Vision 74 (or Pony Coupe) could be based on the platform – though any official details about the model won’t be revealed until May 27 at the earliest.
