A photo of the new Volvo EX30 has appeared early on social media – as the Chinese-owned Swedish car maker confirms the first technical details of its smallest electric car yet.
The 2024 Volvo EX30 electric city SUV has appeared online in a leaked image, ahead of its global unveiling on 7 June, and first Australian arrivals by the end of this year.
An image posted to Twitter – which appears to have been found on Volvo’s website – shows the EX30 will blend the lines between hatchback and SUV, and will apply the car maker’s latest design cues from the large EX90 electric SUV.
The design of the EX30 has already leaked in patent photos – but the new image shows the vehicle with paint, production-bound wheels, and other details not visible in the patents.
A side-by-side comparison (below) with today’s Volvo XC40 small SUV confirms the EX30 will be smaller, but is unclear exactly how much smaller it will be.

Drive has used the alloy wheels in the leaked EX30 image to estimate its size, using an XC40 on the same wheel diameter as a guide.
If the wheels on the leaked EX30 are 20 inches in diameter, the vehicle is estimated to measure 4.20 to 4.25 metres long. If they are 19-inch wheels, the EX30 is expected to be closer to four metres long.
For reference, the Volvo XC40 measures 4440mm long, 1910mm wide and 1651mm tall, riding on a 2702mm wheelbase.
Coinciding with the leaked image, Volvo – via UK publication Autocar – has confirmed it will offer the EX30 with two battery options, and a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.
The entry-level option is a 51kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery – technology used by Tesla and China’s BYD, which is cheaper to produce than a traditional lithium-ion pack, but not as energy dense.
Buyers will be able to option a 69kWh battery with nickel-cobalt-manganese chemistry, which when paired with one electric motor at the rear, is estimated to deliver up to 480km of claimed driving range.
The EX30 is said to deliver the “lowest carbon footprint” of any Volvo offered to date. It is also the smallest SUV the company has ever produced.
The 2024 Volvo EX30 is due to be unveiled on 7 June 2023 at 9:30pm AEST.
