The first new Mercedes-AMG SL in a decade is finally about to reach Australia in one high-output V8 model which – adjusted for inflation – is cheaper than its predecessor.
- 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL pricing and specifications
- One V8 model at launch, the SL63
- Many options in Europe are standard in Australia
- Priced from $374,900 plus on-road costs
The 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL is due in Australia in the coming weeks in one V8 model priced from $374,900 plus on-road costs.
The SL was unveiled by Mercedes-Benz in Europe more than 18 months ago, and was initially scheduled to reach Australia late last year – but has been pushed back to the middle of this year, amid production slowdowns and delays in finalising the model range.
It will launch in a single variant, the top-of-the-range SL63 variant with twin-turbo V8 power and the ability to cover zero to 100km/h in a claimed 3.6 seconds.
Cheaper SL43 four-cylinder and less potent SL55 V8 models are offered in Europe, but they are not expected to reach Australia for the time being.

At $374,900 plus on-road costs, the SL63 is the third most-expensive Mercedes-Benz currently on sale in Australia, behind Maybach super-luxury versions of the S-Class sedan and GLS SUV.
Although it is dearer than the final previous-generation SL sold in Australia, the $292,500 plus on-road costs SL500, it costs $1721 more than the outgoing AMG SL63, which cost $373,179 when it was discontinued in 2018.
When the price of the 2018 AMG SL63 is adjusted for inflation – to $437,907 – the new model is $63,007 cheaper.
Powering the new AMG SL63 is a familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 430kW and 800Nm, sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission.
Mercedes-AMG claims a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.6 seconds, and a top speed of 315km/h.
Key performance features include fully-variable all-wheel drive, six drive modes including Race, a Drift Mode, rear-wheel steering, adaptive suspension, hydraulic anti-roll control (instead of anti-roll bars), AMG composite brake discs, and an electronic locking rear differential.
The new SL is claimed to not share a single part with any previous-generation SL – or the departed AMG GT Roadster – and use new underpinnings with an 18 per cent increase in torsional rigidity.
For the first time, it has been developed completely in-house by the Mercedes-AMG performance division. There will be no standard Mercedes-Benz versions.
The soft-top roof is said to be 21kg lighter than the previous model’s folding metal hardtop, and can be opened or closed in 15 seconds at speeds up to 60km/h.
Standard luxury features include an 11.9-inch touchscreen, nappa leather sports seat with heating, cooling and power adjustment, a head-up display, Digital Light matrix LED headlights, Burmester surround sound system, heated steering wheel, and a full suite of advanced safety aids.
