A decade after Michael Schumacher’s tragic skiing accident, a German tabloid magazine has created a fake interview with the former F1 champion using artificial intelligence.
The family of Michael Schumacher says it will launch legal action against a German magazine that used artificial intelligence (AI) to generate a fake interview with the Formula One great.
Die Aktuelle published an image of the former F1 driver on the front cover of its magazine with the headline translating as “Michael Schumacher, the first interview”.
Mr Schumacher hasn’t made a public appearance after suffering a serious brain injury in a skiing accident during a family holiday in the French Alps in late 2013, with little information about his condition offered to the public.
“No meagre, nebulous half-sentences from friends. But answers from him! By Michael Schumacher,” the publication claimed, before revealing the so-called interview had been created using AI.
A spokesperson for the Schumacher family confirmed to sports publication ESPN they would be taking legal action in response to the article.

It’s not the first time the Schumacher family has challenged Die Aktuelle.
In 2014, the tabloid magazine published an image of Mr Schumacher and his wife Corinna on the front cover, with the accompanying word “Awake” – claiming the headline instead referred to other people who had woken from comas.
The publication won a legal stoush against the Schumachers in 2015, after running a headline claiming Corinna Schumacher had found “a new love” – referring to the couple’s daughter, Gina.
The couple’s son, Mick, followed his father into F1, racing for the Haas team in 2021 and 2022, and is currently the reserve driver for the Mercedes-AMG team.
“Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find,” Corinna Schumacher said in a Netflix documentary about her husband.

“We’re together. We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will.
“We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives. ‘Private is private’, as he always said.
“It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
