The high-performance version of the new Range Rover Sport SUV is in line for a new name – and a twin-turbo German heart transplant.
The 2024 Range Rover Sport SV – the successor to the departed Range Rover Sport SVR – is due to be unveiled on 31 May 2023, the British car-maker has confirmed.
The company promises the new, SVR-replacing SV – still named after Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division that developed it – is claimed to be the “fastest, most dynamic and technologically advanced Range Rover Sport ever”.
The new name will not be the biggest change for the new model, as the former in-house 5.0-litre supercharged ‘AJ’ V8 – introduced in a smaller form in 1996 – is poised to make way for a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 from BMW.
In the new-generation standard Range Rover Sport the engine develops 390kW and 750Nm, but in BMW M models it has been tuned to offer outputs up to 467kW and 750Nm.
The outgoing Range Rover Sport SVR used a 423kW/700Nm version of the supercharged AJ V8, which delivered a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.5 seconds – matching the standard 390kW BMW V8 version of the new Range Rover Sport.
Land Rover says the new Sport SV will “initially be offered by invitation only, with a limited-edition specification”.
It’s unclear what will differentiate the special edition from the normal model, when orders will open to all buyers, and how to get on the invite list – though it would make sense for existing SVR customers to get priority.
Spy photos have shown there will be an exterior overhaul, with an aggressive body kit, enlarged wheels, larger brakes, and four large exhaust tips.
“The new performance champion will introduce a number of innovative world-first, sector-first and Range Rover-first technologies that unlock the assertive model’s full performance potential,” Land Rover claims in its media release,
