Nissan unveils mystery sports car concept – UPDATE

A year after releasing illustrations of a sleek two-door sports car, Nissan has now revealed a 3D life-size model.

UPDATE, 2 February 2023: Is this the next Nissan 200SX – with electric power?

The sports car, also known as the Silvia in Japan, was axed from Nissan’s line-up in 2002, but the Japanese car giant has provided its latest indication it is considering a second sports car to be sold alongside the petrol-powered Nissan Z.

A year after releasing illustrations of a sleek two-door sports car called the ‘Max-Out’, Nissan has now revealed a life-size 3D model.

Mystery surrounds the future plans for this vehicle, though Nissan has confirmed its roofless concept car is electric, in line with its plans to launch 23 hybrid or electric models by 2030.

In January 2022, reputable Japanese magazine Best Car reported Nissan is considering a revival of the Silvia in 2025 with electric power, which would bring the nameplate back after a 23-year hiatus.

Our original story continues unchanged below.

29 November 2021: Japanese manufacturer Nissan has taken the covers off an all-new electric sports car concept, dubbed the Max-Out.

The convertible two-seater – which was revealed alongside three other concept vehicles (you can read about those models here and here) – is, for now, just a computer render.

However, a media statement suggests the images could preview a future production variant.

Powertrain details are so far thin on the ground, however Nissan says the vehicle will be underpinned by its CMF-EV architecture, and feature a ‘e-4ORCE’ dual-motor all-wheel drive layout.

In existing models, this platform permits a maximum output of 300kW, 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.9 seconds (claimed), and approximately 500km of driving range between charges.

Meanwhile, an “ultra-lightweight” body and low centre of gravity will provide “dynamic cornering and steering response,” according to Nissan.

The passenger seat has “the unique ability to morph … flattening into the floor to offer more interior space when desired,” the company claims.

Computer-generated images of the vehicle suggest this function works by sliding the second seat backwards into a bodywork cutout for increased storage.

While it’s too early to say if a production variant of the Nissan Max-Out will be sold in Australia, it’s understood at least some of the manufacturer’s new concept vehicles will make it to local showrooms.
