The bespoke Bugatti Chiron ‘Profilée’ is the most expensive new car ever to be sold at auction – attracting a final bid of almost €9.8 million ($AU15.1 million).
A one-off variant of the Bugatti Chiron hypercar has set the record as the most expensive new car to be sold at auction, with bidding reaching almost €9.8 million ($AU15.1 million).
Although an impressive figure, the Chiron Profilée’s new-car auction record falls short of retail sales records set by the Bugatti La Voiture Noire (€11 million or $AU16.96 million) in 2019, and the Rolls-Royce ‘Boat Tail’ (£20 million or $AU30.8 million) in 2021.
The Bugatti Chiron ‘Profilée’ was revealed in December 2022 as a send-off for the French marque’s hypercar, powered by the iconic 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged ‘W16’ engine with an output up to 1177kW and 1600Nm.
At an RM Sotheby’s auction in Paris overnight, the one-of-one Bugatti Chiron Profilée sold for a hammer price of €9,792,500 – equivalent to $15,087,000 in Australian currency – beating the previous new-car auction record.
In 2016, Ferrari donated a new LaFerrari to an RM Sotheby’s charity auction in Daytona, Florida. The hypercar sold for $US7,000,000 – $11.9 million in Australian currency today when adjusted for inflation.
While the Profilée is the last Bugatti Chiron to be revealed, the W16 Mistral roadster will be the hypercar’s final variant to roll off the production line in 2024.
Bugatti initially announced Chiron production would be limited to 500 examples – including variants such as the Pur Sport, Super Sport, Centodieci and W16 Mistral – but the Profilée adds an extra one to the tally.
The future of Bugatti’s models is unknown, after the French brand was taken over by Croatian electric hypercar-maker Rimac and German marque Porsche in 2021 – with ownership of Bugatti split 55:45 respectively.
Despite its connection to Rimac, Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac has previously said there are no plans for the company to go electric before 2032.
Mr Rimac has previously said the Bugatti Chiron’s successor will be fitted with a high-power petrol engine, assisted by hybrid technology to meet the stringent Euro 7 emissions regulations due to come into force in 2025.
