The Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson have claimed joint first place in Drive‘s search for Australia’s safest medium SUV.
The safest medium SUVs in Australia are the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, according to new data compiled as part of Drive‘s 2022 Medium SUV Megatest.
The Tucson and Sportage – models from sister brands that share the same underpinnings – placed equal first for safety in our comparison of the country’s 11 top-selling medium SUVs.
Rounding out the top five rankings for safety were the Haval H6 – the overall winner of our Megatest – in third place, the Ford Escape in fourth place, and the Subaru Forester in fifth place.
The Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage edged ahead of the competition due to their comprehensive safety systems across the range, as well as the extent of these systems’ active capabilities.
For example, both cars feature an autonomous emergency braking system with the ability to detect pedestrians and cyclists, and function at intersections.
They also boast a rear cross-traffic alert that can intervene in the event of a potential collision, plus a safe-exit warning that alerts occupants exiting the vehicle in the event of oncoming traffic.
As part of Drive‘s Medium SUV Megatest, safety was assessed across 17 different criteria, including whether the cars featured tyre pressure monitoring, speed limit awareness, active cruise control with stop-and-go capabilities, and a driver fatigue alert.
Another key pillar of assessment was a vehicle’s ANCAP score, as well as the date the car was last tested by the independent vehicle safety authority.
“It’s important for consumers to purchase a vehicle with the most recent [testing] ‘date stamp’ possible. This will ensure they benefit from the latest crash protection and crash avoidance features,” Rhianne Robson, ANCAP’s Director of Communications & Advocacy, told Drive.
ANCAP testing was harmonised with Euro NCAP protocols in 2018, leading to the introduction of several new test and scoring methods, and was updated again in 2020, when safety assist technologies like autonomous emergency braking and lane support systems began to be assessed.
As such, cars that had five-star ANCAP scores pre-dating testing protocol changes in both 2020 and 2018 had points deducted.
The Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage received five-star scores from 2021 and 2022, respectively.
Claiming third place, the Haval H6 was awarded points for featuring ‘over and above’ features like a centre airbag that can protect the driver and front passenger from head injuries in the event of a side impact, and an overhead-view monitor offering a multi-angle perspective when parking and manoeuvring.
The Haval H6 was also one of only three cars in our Megatest to receive a perfect score for its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, which can detect pedestrians and cyclists, and function at intersections and in reverse.
The Subaru Forester and Mitsubishi Outlander also received perfect scores for their AEB systems.
The fourth-safest medium SUV in our comparison, the Ford Escape, performed well despite last being tested by ANCAP in 2019, bolstering its scores with the inclusion of front and rear parking sensors, and intelligent camera-based speed limit assist.
Placing fifth, the Subaru Forester was also last tested by ANCAP in 2019, but offered a front and kerb-side camera in addition to a reverse camera and a comprehensive AEB system.
Meanwhile, the two lowest scorers in the safety category were the Honda CR-V in 10th place and the Nissan X-Trail in 11th place, but both were outgoing models with dated ANCAP ratings, and both are expecting all-new generation models to arrive within the year.
