Now available in eight-seat 130 form, Land Rover’s best-selling model has been hit with price rises of up to $5970 – yet some features are no longer available.
- 2023 Land Rover Defender pricing and specifications (MY23.5)
- Long-body Defender 130 arrives in SE form
- Various features cut from standard to optional
- Priced from $81,950 plus on-road costs, up $3470 to $5970
Pricing and specifications have been announced for the ‘2023.5’ Land Rover Defender range, with order books now open.
Branded ‘Model Year 2023.5’ (MY23.5), the latest Defender range expands to three body styles with the addition of the eight-seat 130, available solely in SE guise, priced from $124,150 to $131,650 plus on-road costs.
An extra 340mm of sheet metal has been added behind the Land Rover four-wheel-drive’s rear axle, creating a more spacious third row and a larger boot, though at the expense of the off-road departure angle. Click here for full details on the 130 from its reveal in May.
Compared to the Defender 90 and 110 SE, the 130 SE adds adaptive air suspension, a sliding panoramic sunroof, tri-zone climate control with Rear Cooling Assist, an air quality sensor, Cabin Air Purification Plus, a body-coloured spare wheel cover, 60:40 load-through second-row seats, and carpet mats.
Optioning the 130’s extra standard features on a 110 SE would cost about $11,500 – narrowing the price difference between the body styles from approximately $20,000 to $8500.
However, that’s partially a result of price rises across the Defender 90 and 110 range of between $3470 (base Defender 90) and $5970 (Defender 110 V8) for MY23.5 – compounding earlier price rises of $2994 to $4854 for MY23.
Alongside the price hikes, the new ‘2023.5’ model year has seen a number of previously-standard features reverted to the options list, or become unavailable entirely.
The 11.4-inch touchscreen has swapped from standard equipment to a no-cost option on base, S and SE versions of the 90 and 110 – with a smaller 10-inch screen from 2022 now in place – though a 12-inch digital instrument cluster is now standard on S and SE grades, rather than a no-cost option previously.
A centre console (with armrest) has switched from a standard feature to a $360 option on the unnamed base ‘Defender’. A wireless phone charging pad (located on the centre console) is a no-cost addition once the console is optioned – rather than standard equipment, as the charger was for 2023.
The Activity Key standard across the range for MY23 is no longer available on any model – even as an option – while the Clear Exit Monitor system, which notifies occupants if they’re about to open their door into traffic, suffers the same fate.
Oddly, carpet mats – standard across the Defender range for MY23 – are now a $337 option on the base Defender, S and SE grades, in three-door 90 and five-door 110 body styles.
There’s also a ‘Resist’ synthetic material available for the seats of all MY23.5 models except the entry-level Defender, in place of the ‘PVU’ trim (also known as Avantec) offered for MY23.
No changes have been made to the structure of the range – beyond the addition of the 130 variants – meaning there’s still a choice of five engines: three petrol and two diesel. All use an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
The P300 petrol comprises a 221kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which claims to consume 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres of fuel in combined driving (urban and highway), and accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.4 (110) or 7.1 (90) seconds.
The most common engine is the P400, a 3.0-litre turbo petrol inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an electric supercharger, producing 294kW/550Nm for 6.0 or 6.1-second 0-100km/h times, and a 9.9L/100km combined fuel use claim in the 90/100 (or 10.1L/100km in the 130).
Available for performance fans is the P525, a 386kW/625Nm 5.0-litre supercharged petrol V8 good for a 5.2 (90) or 5.4-second (110) 0-100km/h time, towards a top speed of 240km/h. The combined fuel economy claim sits between 12.7 and 12.8L/100km.
Meanwhile, the diesel line-up consists of a 3.0-litre turbo inline-six with mild-hybrid technology, available in 183kW/570Nm ‘D250’ and 221kW/650Nm ‘D300’ tunes. Fuel economy is claimed to sit at 7.9L/100km for the 90 and 100, while 0-100km/h times are as low as 7.0 seconds.
A plug-in hybrid ‘P400e’ model is slated to become available later this year.
