2023 Toyota GR Corolla limited to 500 examples, staff discounts banned

The initial allocation of Toyota GR Corolla hot hatches is expected to be limited to approximately 500 cars in Australia – and employees won’t be able to jump the queue or get a better deal than retail buyers.

The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla will initially be in such short supply that showroom staff and Toyota Australia head office employees will be banned from generous staff discounts, according to dealer sources.

Toyota dealers canvassed by Drive say the exact number of allocated Toyota GR Corolla models is yet to be announced, but said they expect about 500 will initially be distributed across the network of approximately 300 dealers.

This is roughly half the number of Toyota GR Yaris hot hatches that arrived in the initial batch two years ago – and it sold out within seven days.

To avoid price gouging – and to distribute the limited number of cars as fairly as possible – Toyota dealers believe the GR Corolla will initially be only available to order online.

Toyota Australia is yet to disclose pricing, exact arrival timing, or how many examples of the Toyota GR Corolla will come to Australia in the initial shipment later this year.

Toyota dealers canvassed by Drive gave broad price estimates ranging from $60,000 to $70,000 – but noted they were yet to be advised.

A statement from Toyota Australia to Drive said: “All of our recent Toyota Gazoo Racing model offerings have been extremely popular with enthusiasts.

“As with past GR models, Toyota currently expects the supply of GR Corolla for Australia will be limited in its initial production volumes and we will continue to negotiate for as much supply as we can for this important new high-performance model.”
