Cadillac reveals the third in a series of ‘Halo’ concepts, detailing the brand’s ambition to return to the pinnacle of personal luxury.
Cadillac has used the 2022 Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas to showcase the newest of its Halo Portfolio concept cars – vehicles that give a long-term look of the brand’s electrified and fully autonomous future.
Called the Cadillac InnerSpace, this newest concept takes cues from Cadillac’s glamorous past, providing a coupe-like form factor designed to pamper two occupants in ultra-luxurious surrounds.
While not designed as a precursor to any particular future model, the InnerSpace is meant to showcase Cadillac’s, and parent company GM’s, evolving advanced vehicle technologies.
The Cadillac InnerSpace concept is built atop a version of GM’s versatile Ultium electric vehicle architecture, which also underpins the GMC Hummer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV and Chevrolet Equinox EV (the latter two both also revealed at CES 2022).
While GM was vague about some of the concept’s technical details, like drivetrain, outputs and range, Cadillac did reveal a number of key technologies featured in the concept.
Occupants sit in front of a huge wrap-around ‘SMD’ (surface mounted devices) LED screen, and while Cadillac has tried to make the technology sound impressive with an extended description in its press release, the tech itself is much the same as what you’ll find on an LED TV.
The giant display, which sits where you’d normally expect to find the windscreen, allows the InnerSpace’s occupants to select from immersive augmented reality ‘engagement, entertainment and wellness recovery themes’ to pass the time as the concept seamlessly whisks them to their destination.
The cabin also features a panoramic glass roof, and seats that pivot outward to ease entry and egress.
Other fanciful features bundled into the InnerSpace concept include biometric input and artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning – although the full effect of both hasn’t been disclosed in Cadillac’s initial press materials.
Essentially, the InnerSpace aims to harness over-the-air ‘Ultifi’ updates to stay abreast of latest technology features, and deliver a personalised experience that occupants are able to take with them between this and last year’s Halo concepts – the single-seat PersonalSpace and the six-passenger SocialSpace.
Among the potentially more tenable technical features, the InnerSpace concept rolls on a set of specially-designed Goodyear SoundComfort technology tyres. Constructed from soybean oil and rice husk-based silica in place of traditional petroleum products, these are said to help reduce sound wave resonance within the tyre for a peaceful ride.
“The vehicles of the Cadillac Halo Concept Portfolio are designed to provide effortless travel through extraordinary means,” said Bryan Nesbitt, GM executive director of global advanced design.
“They are visions for the next decade and beyond, showing the possibilities enabled by General Motors’ comprehensive approach to autonomous drive technology with the goal of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.”
