No all-new products on the horizon for SsangYong in 2022, but updates will keep the current mainstream range ticking over.
Key to SsangYong’s 2022 plans the brand’s top-selling model, the Musso ute, is set to get a range of new safety tech plus a more powerful engine, according to reports out of Korea.
Following on from a front-end restyle in 2021, Korean-market 2022 Musso models will receive upgrades to their 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engines, raising outputs to 149kW and 441Nm – up from the current 133kW and 400-420Nm in Australian models (depending on transmission).
Both six-speed manual and six-speed torque converter automatic transmissions are expected to continue.
Also on the list of overseas upgrades is a new electric power steering system, replacing the current hydraulic steering – opening the door to the fitment of lane-keep assist and lane centring assist for the first time, rather than the current model’s lane departure warning function.
Other new safety features are claimed to include braking functionality for the rear cross-traffic alert system, safe distance warning (though seemingly not adaptive cruise control), and an updated autonomous emergency braking system with new front camera modules.
Inside, updates are said to include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (replacing the existing 7.0-inch display and analogue dials), heated rear seats, LED interior lights, a reshaped overhead console, and three available drive modes for the electric steering.
An ISG system has also been mentioned in Korea, referring to ‘idle stop and go’ allowing the engine to shut down when stationary to save fuel.
On the radar, though not yet confirmed for Australia is a possible first electric vehicle for the brand locally.
The SsangYong Korando e-Motion takes the current-generation Korando, as already sold in Australia, and switches out the available petrol or diesel engines with a new 140kW/360Nm electric motor, powering the front wheels. In conjunction with a 61.5kWh battery built by LG Chem, the Korando e-Motion offers a claimed 339km of driving range.
The SsangYong Korando e-Motion will go on sale in Europe in January 2022. Australian availability is less clear, however. SsangYong has previously indicated the Korando e-Motion is “under evaluation” for Australia – and that an evaluation vehicle will arrive in Australia early this year – but official confirmation or any word on timing is yet to be confirmed.
The brand is also set to reveal its new J100 electric SUV this year, but there’s no word on if or when it will reach Australia.
