Volkswagen Australia has delivered the 1000th Amarok W580 ute to a customer in Queensland, passing a major milestone which eclipses even the best year of HSV Colorado SportsCat production.
Less than one year after ramping up production at the Walkinshaw Automotive Group – the former parent company of Holden Special Vehicles – the 1000th example of the Volkswagen Amarok W580 has rolled off the Melbourne final assembly line where locally-engineered and locally-developed parts are fitted.
The vehicle – a metallic blue Volkswagen Amarok W580S – was completed in November 2021 before being trucked to Queensland.
The customer who ordered the vehicle was unaware it was the 1000th example to be built – until it was delivered.
The built plate confirms the vehicle is the 1000th example of the flagship ute.
If all goes to plan, Volkswagen and Walkinshaw will deliver another 1000 examples of the W580 next year – split across the road-biased W580S and the off-road focused W580X.
While the base model W580 has been deleted, the new range will see the W580S and W580X sold alongside each other until the next-generation Volkswagen Amarok – based on the new Ford Ranger – arrives mid 2023.
Volkswagen is yet to announce plans to continue with the Walkinshaw program after the switch to the next-generation Amarok. However, given the sales success, the early signs are promising.
A Walkinshaw edition would also deliver further differentiation between the new Amarok and new Ranger, which will be twins under the skin.
Despite its age, the Amarok is the biggest selling Volkswagen model in Australia amid stock shortages of passenger cars and SUVs caused by the semiconductor crisis.
Australia is currently the third-biggest market for the Volkswagen Amarok globally – and the biggest market for TDV6 models, which make up 90 per cent of the local sales mix.
