Ford V8 fans have a reason to cheer going into the Christmas holiday season.
After a year of video-after-video of super-quick electric vehicles wiping the floor with petrol-powered performance cars – to demonstrate the instant acceleration of the emerging technology – at least one supercharged V8 has managed to come out on top in a head-to-head contest.
One of the world’s biggest automotive websites – Edmunds, based in the US – has lined up the Ford Mustang Mach E Performance AWD against the Ford Mustang GT Shelby 500 at Willow Springs Raceway in California.
The Ford Mustang Mach E GT Performance (358kW/860Nm) launches cleanly off the line thanks to its all-wheel-drive grip, and gaps its rival by several car lengths for most of the run after the supercharged 5.2-litre V8 (567kW/847Nm) fries the rear tyres in first and second gears.
But the Ford Mustang Mach E GT Performance only gets five seconds of full power before suffering an asthma attack – at about the same time the supercharged V8’s power and Michelin-tyre grip truly kick in.
To the naked eye it looks like a close contest and the numbers tell a similar story. If the battle were only to 100km/h, the electric Mustang might have had the edge given, in this race at least, the Shelby got a less-than-perfect start.

Meantime, the video for this contest is below.
