The Chinese manufacturer is looking to break into the Australian market in 2022 with a range of budget electric cars.
Following several false starts, it appears electric cars from Chinese manufacturer BYD could be
finally set to arrive in Australian showrooms.Local distributor Nexport has promised to roll out “four to six models over the next 24 months,” and claims it will become a “top-five manufacturer” during that period.
While those claims are highly ambitious, work has begun on a Sydney experience centre and evaluation vehicles are already doing the rounds on local roads.
A “sub-$35,000” hatchback called the EA1 or Dolphin (depending on the market) was initially slated as the debut model in Australia, however Drive now understands the larger – and presumably more expensive – Yuan Plus SUV (shown above) is planned to arrive in February 2022 as the sole initial offering.
In 2021 the company sold an E6 people mover and T3 van in extremely low volumes (believed to be 15 of the former and 50 of the latter), however these models have since been discontinued.
All BYD cars in Australia will be sold online through the
EVDirect website, and Nexport recently signed a servicing agreement with Kmart Tyres.Model | What’s new? | Segment | Timing | Read more |
