2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i-S: owner review

What we love
  • Go anywhere reliability for two
What we don’t
  • Eyesight system

We bought this car to give us a vehicle for long distance trips away, across varied county, and to provide load carrying capacity around town. It is not used for commuting. We chose the Forester as a long term vehicle due to Subaru’s reputation for reliability, it’s capability, interior space and value for money.

The vehicle performs to and above our expectations both off and on road. It has ample performance for our needs and the AWD makes it sure-footed, especially in the rain, as demonstrated when accelerating away from the lights. Rough dirt roads are handled with ease, loaded with luggage, with mostly two – and occasionally four – on board.

We have experienced no major technical problems apart from a double dose of hail damage and a couple of minor dings. However the standard Eyesight technology that controls functions such as cruise control, emergency braking and lane alerts is rather immature on this seven year old vehicle. The emergency braking almost caused a couple of accidents due to unwarranted activation scenarios that a human would have anticipated better. Variable cruise control is frustrating due to the extremely cautious settings which result in being shuffled back down the queue in medium to heavy traffic.

One needs to learn a new language to operate the voice operated hands free function, which is not user friendly. Much like the navigation system too.
In my experience based on this system, car electronics systems have a long way to go to become intuitive and easy to use, allowing the driver to focus on driving.

Apart from general wear and tear over 100,000km, my other beef is the quality of the pleather accents in the seats which are cracking well before their expected life. No that’s not a pun!

All in all, out of the three vehicles we own the Forester is our go to car for day-to-day stuff and long journeys. My wife appreciates the high driving position. If we had bought this again at the time, we would probably have bought the ‘L’ model without the Eyesight function and 17-inch wheels and higher profile tyres for a little more comfortable ride.

Would we buy another Forester as a replacement? Yes, we would provided they come up with a decent hybrid or EV version.
