And 2021 is set for a record year with 73 million cars already produced globally.
The number of cars built each year around the world is staggering.
So far in 2021, over 73 million cars have been produced by the world’s manufacturers. That number is growing – and you can watch that growth in real time, thanks to a live tracker hosted by respected data researchers, Worldometer.
At the time of starting to write this article, the Worldometer showed 73,294,725 cars have been produced so far this year, and the number is growing even as you’re reading this.
The US-based organisation sources its data from the latest global statistics issued by the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA).
The staggering number, it should be noted, excludes light commercial vehicles and focuses exclusively on passenger vehicles, including SUVs, which account for 74 per cent of annual production.
Global production topped the 70 million mark for the first time in 2016 when 72,105,435 new cars and SUVs rolled off the world’s carmakers’ production lines. Of those, 33.9 per cent came from China, a country quickly emerging as the number one carmaker in the world.
