Honda’s new hot hatch hero has been teased, confirming its predecessor’s aggressive styling and big wing haven’t been lost in the transition to a new model.
Honda has provided our first official preview at the next generation of its iconic small hot hatch, the new 2022 Honda Civic Type R, slated for an Australian launch next year.
Teased in a pair of images released by Honda overnight, the new Civic Type R won’t stray too far from the extroverted appearance of its predecessor, with a tall fixed rear wing, large circa 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels, aggressive front and rear fascia treatments, and a trio of centre-mounted exhaust tips.
However, in keeping with the standard Civic hatchback’s more conservative styling, the new Type R range-topper’s flared rear wheel arches have been blended in with the bodywork, compared to the more distinct arch extensions of the outgoing model.
The rear wing supports and endplates, front air intake design and front wheel-arch vents have also been brought back a notch in the aggression stakes compared to the outgoing car.
No performance or chassis details were confirmed alongside the teaser, however Honda has previously confirmed the new Civic Type R will be offered with a manual transmission – suggesting rumours out of Japan of a twin-motor, all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid drivetrain developing close to 300kW won’t come to fruition.
Instead, it’s more likely a development of the current’s car’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and front-wheel-drive layout will be fitted, which currently sends 228kW and 400Nm (in Australian models) to the road through a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.
The images confirm high-performance Brembo brakes and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres will be offered, likely joining track-tuned adaptive dampers, a multi-mode sports exhaust system, and a slew of other chassis enhancements designed with performance in mind.
Inside the cabin, spy photos suggest the current car’s red suede-trimmed front sports seats will carry over, expected to be complemented by the standard 2022 Civic’s new twin-screen dashboard layout, and various Type R-specific upgrades including carbon-fibre accents, Type R badging, an aluminium shift knob, and an Alcantara steering wheel.
The 2022 Honda Civic Type R will launch in Australia sometime next year, Honda’s local arm has suggested. US-bound examples will be stamped Model Year 2023, suggesting a launch in the second half of 2022.
Stay tuned to Drive for the new Honda Civic Type R’s full reveal over the coming months.
