2022 Toyota Corolla Cross revealed for Japan, due in Australia next year

Petrol and hybrid variants of the five-seater SUV are due Down Under in late 2022.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross has been unveiled for the Japanese market, however the hatchback-derived SUV is still at least 12 months away from arriving in Australian showrooms.

Following the reveal of the south-east Asian-market model last year, Toyota has taken the wraps off a Japanese domestic market variant of the Corolla Cross, with unique front-end styling – though it’s not clear which exterior appearance will come to Australia.

A performance-themed GR Sport model has also been shown off in Taiwan, however a local launch is yet to be locked in for this variant.

For the Japanese market, the vehicle is equipped exclusively with a 1.8-litre non-turbo petrol engine, available in petrol-only and hybrid forms – with the latter the same system as Australia’s popular Corolla Hybrid small car.

Petrol versions send 103kW/170Nm to the front wheels via a belt-driven CVT, while the hybrid offers 90kW, a choice of two- or all-wheel drive layouts, and a combined fuel economy claim on Japan’s notoriously lenient WLTC cycle of 3.8L/100km.

The five-seater SUV measures 4460mm from nose to tail, 1825mm wide, and 1620mm at the highest point. Toyota claims a boot size of 487 litres.

Black plastic cladding runs along the door sills, and lower grille. Tyres wrap around 18-inch alloy wheels on flagship variants.

Inside the cabin, wireless phone charging, climate control, electric seats and artificial leather are offered on range-topping variants. A choice of 7.0- or 4.2-inch digital displays sits behind the steering wheel, while infotainment comes via a 9.0-inch centrally-mounted screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A spokesperson for Toyota Australia told Drive: “The Corolla Cross is scheduled to arrive in Australia from late next year … We are planning to offer both petrol and hybrid-electric powertrains, just as we do with our Yaris Cross, C-HR, RAV4 and Kluger SUVs.

“The newest member of the Corolla family slots between the Yaris Cross and our best-selling RAV4 and promises to be a stylish, versatile and practical addition to our range.

“Further details for Australia [including pricing] will be announced closer to the launch.”
