The first shipments of the all-new 2022 Hyundai Staria Load have begun arriving in Australian dealerships after a lengthy delay. The first all-new model in 14 years starts with the same price as a Toyota HiAce.
UPDATE 20 September 2021: Hyundai dealers have been advised pricing for all 2022 Hyundai Staria Load vans ahead of showrooms arrivals later this year.
Dealers across Australia were initially sent approximately 200 “limited release” Hyundai Staria Load vans priced from $45,240 plus on-road costs.
However these models lack blind zone warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit warning (though they do come with seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking and front and rear cameras).
As a result, they were priced $500 less than the regular models due later this year. Meantime, five-seat versions of the new generation van are $3000 dearer than their two-seat equivalent.
In a media briefing yesterday, a Hyundai Australia representative there was potentially room for a flagship variant of the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load (with, for example, LED headlights and a 360-degree camera from the people mover variant, among other luxuries).
However, for now the Hyundai Staria Load range will focus on the no-frills fleet market.
Prices for all five variants (excluding on-road costs such as registration, stamp duty, and dealer delivery) are as follows:
- Hyundai Staria Load limited release two-seat liftback 2.2TD auto: $45,240 (while stocks last)
- Hyundai Staria Load two-seat liftback 2.2TD auto: $45,740
- Hyundai Staria Load two-seat barn doors 2.2TD auto: $45,740
- Hyundai Staria Load five-seat liftback 2.2TD auto: $48,240

The original story published at the end of August 2021 appears below:
The successor to one of Australia’s top-selling delivery vans – the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load – has arrived in showrooms with a futuristic look and first-in-class advanced safety technology.
The changes have brought with them a price rise of $5560 – or 15 per cent, compared to the model it replaces – however the RRP remains on par with class rivals.
The price of the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load – $45,240 plus on-road costs – is identical to the top-selling Toyota HiAce diesel with automatic transmission, signalling Hyundai’s intention to tackle its main rival head-on.
The changes to the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load – the first examples of which are beginning to arrive in Australian showrooms following delays due to the global semiconductor shortage – go beyond the love-it-or-hate-it spaceship styling.
The first completely new Hyundai delivery van in 14 years now shares its underpinnings with Hyundai’s recently updated large SUV, the Santa Fe.
Standard equipment includes a full suite of advanced safety technology, including radar cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, front and rear parking sensors and – two firsts for the class – a centre airbag between the front seats, and a 360-degree camera.
Photos of the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load in storage show the delivery van comes with a thin plastic strip rather than a wide daytime running light across its nose, and the headlights appear to be halogen rather than LED. The forward-facing camera can be shown below the badge (pictured above).
Although the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load misses out on the super-wide 10.25-inch infotainment screen in the dash, the 8.0-inch display is bigger than the current model’s 7.0-inch layout.
While the previous Hyundai iLoad van was powered by a 2.5-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder (125kW/441Nm) paired to a five-speed automatic and rear-wheel-drive, the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load uses the Hyundai’s 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine (130kW/430Nm) paired to an eight-speed ‘conventional’ torque converter automatic transmission driving the front wheels.
The switch to a smaller capacity engine and an eight-speed auto are said to greatly improve fuel economy, reportedly undercutting the previous model Hyundai iLoad and the Toyota HiAce diesel, according to information shared with dealers.
While the Toyota HiAce and other vans are offered with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load is for now an automatic-only proposition.
It is unclear if Hyundai’s new delivery van will eventually be offered with the same all-wheel-drive layout offered on its twin, the Hyundai Staria passenger van (pictured below), because the commercial vehicle is equipped with a different rear end to accomodate heavy-duty rear suspension.
While the top-selling Toyota HiAce is rear-wheel-drive, which delivers an exceptionally tight turning circle (for a van) of 11.0 metres, the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load turning circle is believed to have grown from 11.22 metres from its rear-drive predecessor to 11.94 metres with the new model (the turning circle figure for the Hyundai Staria passenger van).
Stats for the 2022 Hyundai Staria people mover – the twin to the Staria Load delivery van – list the roof height at 1990mm (the same as the new Toyota Hiace).
Hyundai recommends only driving into car parks with clearance heights no lower than 2.15 metres. When the tailgate is open, the Staria needs 2.1 metres clearance.
Towing capacity on the new Hyundai van is said to have improved, despite the shift to front-wheel drive. Information shared with dealers lists the provisional towing capacity at 2500kg, up from 1500kg currently.
Although the steel wheels look similar to those on the outgoing Hyundai iLoad, they are larger in diameter than before, growing from 16 inches to 17 inches to accomodate larger brakes.
Examples spotted at Hyundai dealers were equipped with Nexen tyres, which previous testing has shown lack wet-weather grip.

Hyundai dealers have been told there is just one version of the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load available initially, with a liftback tailgate, priced from $45,240 plus on-road costs. The only option for now is metallic paint ($695).
A barn door version may be added to the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load range next year, however this model may miss out on the 360-degree camera and instead only have front and rear cameras.
Media road tests of the 2022 Hyundai Staria Load are yet to commence. Drive will review the vehicle as soon as we can get behind the wheel.
