2003-06 Mazda 3: More than 70,000 cars declared with airbag fault

A badge on the steering wheel could become brittle and shatter in an airbag-deploying accident, according to the manufacturer.

Mazda has recalled 73,813 examples of its 2003-06 Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback, citing a potential fault with the steering wheel airbag assembly.

The affected vehicles were sold between 2003 and 2007 (stamped Model Years 2003 to 2006).

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “The plastic horn pad logo may become brittle and fracture during an airbag deployment.

“In the event of an airbag deployment, the plastic fragments of the shattered logo may propel into the vehicle and hit vehicle occupants, causing serious injury.

“Mazda Australia will contact all affected customers to advise them to present their vehicle to their preferred Mazda Dealer for replacement of the horn cover at no charge.”
