Volkswagen preparing mobile EV-charging robots

Volkswagen is developing robots that can find and charge electric vehicles in need of a range boost. The idea behind the robots is simple: vehicles low on charge can park in a regular multi-storey carpark, and wirelessly communicate with the charging infrastructure. An autonomous robot will then deliver a small charger to the vehicle, wirelessly open the car's charge port, and connect up the charger.

Rivian: Electric carmaker shows off 'tank turn'

Electric ute- and SUV-maker Rivian has teased a feature that allows its vehicles to spin on the spot. With an electric motor on each wheel, the Rivian R1T and R1S are capable of spinning the wheels on their right-hand side in the opposite direction to those on the left-hand side. In essence, that means the R1T and R1S will be able to rotate on the spot – essentially, the car can perform a 360-degree turn without moving forwards or backwards, like it's on an automotive lazy Susan.

2019 BMW X3 M review

As the popularity of flagship performance cars grows, so too does the range of options available. It goes without saying that for BMW, getting M badges on more cars makes sense. The one gap in the line-up so far has been a fully fledged M warrior for the X3 range – one of the most popular models BMW sells, and still growing its share.

It's not worth it: make the right call on the road these holidays

The most common causes of fatal car accidents in Australia, according to the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE), are speed, alcohol, fatigue, and distraction. A significant 42 per cent of fatal crashes between the years 2013 and 2018 occurred at speeds above 100km/h, but booze is likewise a major factor in many fatal crashes, and inattention has become a common cause since the advent of mobile phones.

The new Outlander (above), set to use a platform shared with alliance partners Renault and Nissan, will again feature a PHEV variant.

Mercedes-AMG GT73 plug-in hybrid teased

Mercedes-AMG appears to be readying a plug-in hybrid GT four-door range-topper, potentially packing around 600kW. Although fleeting, the end of a video on Mercedes-AMG's social media channels shows a GT four-door's rear end covered with camouflage. As it takes off into the distance, the car doesn't make an angry V8 sound – instead, there's the distinct hum of an electric motor, before the camera cuts to a graphic reading "THE FUTURE OF PERFORMANCE".

2020 Ford Transit Custom 320S Sport review

Although the 2020 Ford Transit Custom Sport looks like it was made in jest, Ford is the one that’s laughing. If a van is the ‘face’ of your business, then why not make it at least a little exciting? For a $3500 premium, you can give the $44,990 Transit Custom short wheelbase (SWB) with automatic transmission the flick in exchange for the $48,490 Transit Custom Sport. You can pay another $5000 for the same spec with a long-wheelbase (LWB) chassis and body.

2021 Volkswagen Caddy sketched out

A sketch giving us a good look at the next-generation Volkswagen Caddy has been revealed. While the car's overall shape and styling should stay true to this sketch, there are some elements with concept car stamped over them, such as the large alloy wheels, exceptionally low-profile tyres, hidden door handles, and wing mirror location. The bumper designs and aggressive side sill could go into production, although they will likely be reserved for an off-road themed variant.

2020 Porsche 911 spied with Aero Package

The 2020 Porsche 911 has been snapped wearing a new, not-quite-motorsports aero bodykit. It's not quite clear what this 992-generation 911 represents, because it wears elements that could have been borrowed from a number of different models. The wheels have more than a hint of 911 GT3 to their design, while the front bar has echoes of the previous-generation 911 Turbo about it.

2013-19 BMW X6, X6 M recalled

If the retaining bracket breaks, the ISOFIX seat mightn't be secured properly, increasing the risk of injury to children in an accident.

2019 BMW M850i Coupe review

The resurrection of a sports car, performance car or supercar nameplate will always stir the passions of enthusiasts, be it for good or bad. Such is the case with the 2019 BMW 8 Series range. Evoking memories of impossibly low and lean coupes positioned as undeniable flagships for the brand in the 1990s, the new 8 Series has shunned heartwarming retro pastiche and arrives as an evolution of the nameplate.

According to the company, the plastic flap on top of the airbag could rip off when the front passenger airbag is activated. If the flap on top of the airbag tears off, the front passenger airbag mightn't properly restrain the passenger in an accident. There's also a risk the plastic flap will be propelled as a single piece, or in smaller splinters, into the cabin.

2019 Skoda Octavia 110TSI Sport sedan review

There’s a reason we spend so much time recommending Skodas to prospective buyers, and the 2019 Skoda Octavia 110TSI Sport sedan embodies many of them. It’s attractive, affordable, practical and, perhaps most importantly, a pretty enjoyable thing to drive for something that is so useful.

A total of 3315 cars are included in the recall – a VIN list is attached here.

Honda CEO pours cold water on EV demand

Honda's boss has cast doubt on whether buyers really want electric vehicles, instead arguing hybrid vehicles are key to meeting government regulations. An interview in industry journal Automotive News Europe, Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo said "hybrid vehicles are the way to abide by different environmental regulations". "The objective is not electrification, per se, but improving fuel efficiency," Hachigo told ANE.

The most infuriating fake bits on today's cars

This story was first published in November 2017. As manufacturers look to establish new, clear identities among their competitors, car design has taken a few interesting turns. In some cases, that's a good thing – interesting LED signatures, for example – but there are some that don’t actually serve a purpose, and look terrible to boot. Here are our least favourite non-functional styling touches, and where to find them.

2020 Lada Niva revealed

Just over two decades have passed since the Lada Niva exited the Australian market. In Russia, it’s still going strong. For 2020, the 42-year-old SUV has been treated to some modest changes. They don’t disguise the Niva’s age, the little SUV looking much as it did when it first rolled off the Togliatti production line in 1977. The only change to the exterior is the addition of fog lights to Urban models.

First FCA model to use compact Peugeot platform could be Alfa Romeo SUV

The Alfa Romeo Tonale compact crossover could be built on the same platform as the Peugeot 208, thanks to the recently-signed merger between Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot Citroen. 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI spied

The Mk8 Volkswagen Golf GTI has been snapped testing in Europe. Don't be fooled by this particular Golf GTI's dowdy-looking front end, behind the clever camouflage is a more aggressive front bar with extra cooling for its more powerful engine. There are wider side sills and the rear is home to a racy-looking diffuser, along with larger exhaust pipes – that are actually exposed, not hidden behind a chrome insert on the bumper – hinting at the GTI's extra performance potential.

2019 Holden Equinox LTZ long-term review: Farewell

The Holden Equinox seems to be often forgotten in a heavily populated segment, so after spending six months with it, is it worth considering? After six months and over 6000km, we will be saying goodbye to ‘Pablo’, the 2019 Holden Equinox LTZ AWD from the CarAdvice long-term test fleet. Over this time, the medium SUV has clocked around 7000km on the highway, in the city, and on a road trip, while we tested the cabin practicality and infotainment.

2019 Toyota Camry, 2019-20 Coaster recalled

Toyota has recalled the 2018 Camry and Camry Hybrid, and the 2019-20 Coaster bus, over concerns about the seatbelts. According to the company, one of the two locking mechanisms in the seatbelts mightn't lock as required. If one of the locking mechanisms doesn't function, passengers might not be properly restrained in an accident, increasing their risk of injury or death. A total of 1058 vehicles are recalled – 1044 Camrys, and 14 Coasters. A VIN list is attached here.

2010, 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV recalled

Mitsubishi Australia has recalled the 2010 and 2012 i-MiEV electric vehicle over concerns about a corroding vacuum pump. According to the company, the electric vacuum pump could corrode when exposed to snow, ice or salt spray, and diminish the car's braking power. 2014-19 Ford Mondeo recalled

Ford Australia has recalled the 2014-2019 Mondeo, over concerns about the battery. According to the company, battery acid could leak around the negative battery terminal. If copper sulphate accumulates over time, there's a chance a "low-resistance conductive layer" could form under the battery monitoring sensor, which could make the surrounding area ignite – even if the car is parked. There's a risk of injury to anyone around the car if it catches fire.

The neat little features every new car should have by now

This story was first published in January 2018. Fewer things grind my gears more than the absence of a little feature that ought to be standard in cars by now. Here's the enormity of my quibbling faultfinding, though: I'm not here right now to go on about utterly crucial systems like lane-keep assistance and autonomous emergency braking. Those should absolutely be standard by now, but that's not where I'm at today.

2019 Volvo XC40 T4 Momentum review

Through the vagaries of time – and our bookings calendar – I hadn’t driven the Volvo XC40, any Volvo XC40, prior to this one. That’s around two years of having not driven it since its global launch in 2017. Of course, I was well aware of the small SUV’s reputation after it picked up a slew of awards around the world, not to mention the generally glowing reviews on our very own CarAdvice.

McLaren Speedtail testing wraps with 403km/h run

The 2020 McLaren Speedtail is ready for production, having topped 400km/h at the Kennedy Space Centre in its final test. The production-ready 'Hyper-GT' hit 403km/h with Kenny Brack, chief McLaren test driver, behind the wheel. It wasn't a one-and-done effort, either. McLaren says the Speedtail hit its top speed more than 30 times on the space shuttle landing runway in Florida.

First 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 arrives at Holden in Australia, but there’s a catch

The first 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 has landed in Australia, according to a post on Holden’s official Instagram page (pictured below). The new generation Corvette was photographed inside Holden’s engineering centre in Melbourne with test equipment and a Holden Acadia SUV in the background. It is the first sign of the iconic US sports car on Australian soil since Holden confirmed in July 2019 that it was headed Down Under.

Though primarily used for official duties, the L5 has been made available in small numbers to private buyers.

Mechanical sympathy: Quit hurting your car!

Design Review: Pontiac Club de Mer (1956)

It's no secret we enjoy featuring old American automobiles in this Design Review series - especially futuristic prototypes designed to impress and inspire. A good example is the Pontiac Club de Mer that was unveiled at the 1956 Motorama - an annual show held by General Motors. The goal of the prototype was to show that Pontiac could produce sporty vehicles, breaking away from its past and rushing headlong into a new era.

BMW defends new design language

BMW is defending its controversial decision to use considerably larger versions of its classic double-kidney grille. Product boss Peter Henrich told Autocar the new design language has received “very positive” feedback and that he was “convinced” the new direction was wise. Under design director Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW grilles have increased in size, starting with the refreshed 7 Series and all-new X7.

2019 Mazda BT-50 GT 4x4 dual-cab review

It’s been over 12 months since I last jumped behind the wheel of the Mazda BT-50, and that time around it was to, uh, celebrate the fact the local division had treated its dual-cab ute to a new front bumper. For 2019, the changes are even smaller in scale, because there aren't any.

Production of the 991-generation Porsche 911 has come to an end, more than 12 months after the reveal of its successor. A total of 233,540 have been built since the 991-generation was launched in 2011, making it the best-selling iteration in the 911's history. The 991 represented a technological step-change for Porsche's rear-engined icon. It was lighter than its predecessor – a first for the 911 – and had a longer wheelbase.

Ram produces 5000th right-hand drive vehicle in Australia

The Ram pick-up from the USA has passed a major milestone in Australia, with the 5000th example converted to right-hand drive locally in less than four years. Demand for the Ram 1500 – and its bigger Ram 2500 and 3500 siblings – is so strong the Melbourne facility that remanufactures the trucks to right-hand drive has been operating 24 hours a day since the 1500th example was made in middle of 2019 (pictured below).

How to clean your car during water restrictions

While much of Australia is experiencing Level 2 water restrictions, there is a way to wash your car at home with a pressure cleaner while staying within the law. The current Level 2 water restrictions for washing cars requires the use of a bucket – even though many argue this wastes more water than a well-aimed hose with a nozzle – but there is a way to use a pressure cleaner at home while using less water than the average shower.

Details about the BMW iX3, the company's first all-electric crossover, have been revealed before sales begin in Europe and other global markets in 2020. 2020 BMW 750i xDrive review

Having debuted in its current generation in 2016, the BMW 7 Series has now reached its planned midlife update, or Life Cycle Impulse (no, really) in BMW-speak. While most brands offer a small change to lights or bumpers in a way that appeals to trainspotters mostly, BMW has been bolder. Much bolder. It's given the 2020 BMW 750i xDrive you see here an unmissable new face.

Honda S2000 reborn to celebrate 20th anniversary

The Honda S2000 is making a comeback... but not as an all-new model to rival the BMW Z4 and Porsche Boxster. To celebrate 20 years since the rev-happy roadster's launch, Honda Japan is preparing a custom one-off for the Tokyo Auto Salon. And no, it's not standard.

2019 Audi S4 Avant review

It might seem strange that Audi would update its MY19 S4 Avant so late in 2019. If for no other reason than an MY20 nameplate is being readied for a forthcoming facelift – new look, new infotainment, a new not-for-Oz diesel version – due around the middle of 2020, and a car that we checked out during the global A4 update back in July. Still, a smattering of upgrades for no added outlay right now aims to entice buyers into the current wagon while Australia waits for next year’s new-looker.

Baby Jeep due in 2022 – report

Rolls-Royce Bespoke: Following the configuration of a Cullinan from Melbourne to Goodwood

Every time you spot a Rolls-Royce on the road, you can be almost certain the configuration of that car will be unique. That's because when you buy a Rolls-Royce, you're not buying another car already in stock or a clone that rolls down the production line. Each Rolls-Royce is built to a specification and an order, which means you're unlikely to ever find two identical vehicles.

2020 BMW X2 facelift, plug-in hybrid and EV spied

BMW is preparing a facelift for its the X2, and the crossover looks as though it will gain plug-in hybrid and pure electric variants. Spied on the back of a trailer, the updated X2 looks as though it will have a revised grille design and new headlight graphics. Circular fog lights were once a signature of BMW's range of X crossovers, but since the introduction of the current X3, X5 and X7 this feature has been steadily eliminated.

2019 Lexus ES300h F Sport review

I love sports cars, but there’s something to be said for a large sedan that knows its place in the world. Cars like the Lexus ES300h. The latest model looks exciting, with a dramatic grille and sloping roof, but it’s a low-maintenance cruiser at heart. That makes an ES fettled by F Sport, the Lexus answer to BMW M or Audi RS, something of a contradiction. But don’t be fooled, this isn’t powered by the high-revving V8 engine from the LC500 and GS F.

Porsche and LucasFilm reveal collaborative Star Wars ship design

If you've ever wondered just how involved a celebrity is with the formulation of their namesake scent or clothing line, today's unveiling might have you wondering the same of the designers at Porsche and Disney.

Nissan Australia will start selling the all-new (and slightly less polarising) Juke crossover locally from the middle of 2020, ending lingering doubts over whether it would make it here. When the second-generation Juke was revealed in September, Nissan Australia stopped short of confirming it would be available to us, only saying it was "very interested".

The move reflects "changing customer preferences including an overall shift towards SUVs", said Ford Australia communications boss Matt Moran.

Volkswagen fined record $125 million for dieselgate in Australia

The Federal Court has fined Volkswagen a record $125 million – almost twice the $75 million it had agreed upon with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) – for making "false representations" about the diesel emissions of more than 57,000 cars. It is the highest penalty ever handed down by the Federal Court for breaching Australian consumer law.

2021 BMW M3 spied with manual gearstick

The 2021 BMW M3 has been snapped in greater detail during testing, revealing its interior and more about its aggressive exterior makeover. Like the last car we spotted, this M3 isn't wearing any fake body panels. That means we can see it wears headlights similar to what we're expecting from the 4 Series, instead of the notched units that feature on the non-M 3 Series.

2019/20 Hyundai Sonata, Kia Cerato tow bar wiring harness recalled

Hyundai and Kia have issued a recall for the tow bar wiring harness sold through official dealers and fitted to the Sonata and Cerato. Due to incorrect wiring, the faulty tow bar wiring harness might not allow the trailer hazard lights to flash when the car is turned off. If the hazards aren't operating correctly, there's a risk other road users mightn't see a stopped or slowing car, increasing the risk of accident. The original recall advertisement is attached here.

Lexus developing twin-turbo V8

Lexus may be on the cusp of introducing its first battery-electric vehicle, but that doesn’t mean it’s slowing development of internal combustion engines. Next year represents the third time Toyota Gazoo Racing has competed at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring with a Lexus LC – and the 14th consecutive year the team has participated.

2020 Renault Kadjar Intens review

The new Kadjar is exactly what Renault needs in Australia now – at least, it is on paper. After all, compact and medium crossovers are among the best-selling vehicles in the country, and the Kadjar is something of a segment-straddling goldilocks. It shares its underpinnings with the Nissan Qashqai, among the strongest-selling compact crossovers in the world, but Renault has given it a larger body. It's knocking on the door of cars like the Hyundai Tucson for size, both inside and out.

RANGE REVIEW: 2020 BMW 3 Series – which model should you buy?

The BMW 3 Series family currently comprises four engine and spec-level choices, kicking off with the 320i (there’s no 318i for now). Next step is the volume-selling 330i, then there’s the left-field 330e plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and finally the M340i xDrive flagship in lieu of the yet-to-be-released new M3 coming soon enough. We have five models of the BMW 3 Series family, and Mike Costello asks the question - which is the one you should buy?

2020 Jeep Wrangler safety upgrade from 1 star to 3 stars, weak structure still in the way of a 5-star score

The Jeep Wrangler's "poor" one-star ANCAP rating has been improved to a "marginal" three-star rating for 2020 with the addition of active safety technology – but the structural shortcomings that prevented it from getting a five-star rating remain.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has bought Bowler, the boffins behind some of the world's wildest Land Rover Defenders. Bowler has been around since 1965, and specialises in creating cars for the rough-and-tumble world of rally raid. Its cars are built in low volumes, powered by either V6 turbo-diesel or supercharged V6 petrol engines. It was the supplier for the one-make Defender Challenge that ran between 2014 and 2016, too. Land Rover has been working with the company since 2012.

2019 Audi A8 recalled

Audi has recalled the 2019 A8 large sedan, over concerns one of the wheel options isn't strong enough. Cars fitted with the "Audi Sport 5 double-spoke V design, matte titanium look, machine-polished" wheels have been recalled, because the rims don't meet "strength specifications". "If an affected vehicle hits the kerb or crosses speed humps or uneven road conditions at high speed, the wheel spokes could potentially break," Audi says.

Hyundai Australia hosts first ever N Festival

“Is this anybody’s first time on a racetrack?” Hyundai N Technician Geoff Fear asks from atop the pit wall of Wakefield Park Raceway. It’s a question I’ve only ever seen inspire sheepishness in participants of track days before, yet when a third of the crowd of 128 drivers gathered in front of Fear shoot a hand towards the sky, they do it with glee.

Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group sign binding merger agreement

The two companies say they will, in time, generate two-thirds of its sales from just two platforms: one for compact cars, and one for compact and mid-size models. Each platform is expected to generate around three million sales per year globally.

2020 BMW X1 sDrive18d review

The BMW X1 seems to answer a question: do SUV buyers prioritise driving dynamics over interior space? Ever since the larger, second-generation X1 was released locally in 2015, its full-year sales results have out-performed the peak of BMW’s original compact SUV that was more engaging to drive.

2020 Skoda Karoq gets less efficient 110TSI engine, new 140TSI Sportline hero

Skoda will swap the 1.5-litre engine in the base Karoq for a less efficient 1.4-litre unit in 2020 – and it says Australia's emissions regulations are to blame. The only Karoq on offer in Australia is currently the 110TSI, which is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine making 110kW and 250Nm. It's mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Audi, Tesla, MG score top marks in ANCAP testing, Hyundai Venue falls short

ANCAP has awarded the Tesla Model X, Audi A7 and Q8, and the MG HS five stars in its latest round of crash tests, but the Hyundai Venue city SUV fell short. The independent safety body called the all-electric Tesla Model X the "standout performer" among the five cars tested, record-equalling scores for adult occupant protection and safety assist. Meanwhile, the Audi A7 and Q8 demonstrated "good performance in all assessment areas".

BMW Z4 M40i gets a power boost for 2020

But Z4 M40i buyers from early in 2020 will get an uprated version of the same engine making 285kW and 500Nm – identical to what's on offer in the M340i xDrive and X3 M40i with which the roadster shares its engine.

2007-12 Hyundai i30: More than 106,000 cars recalled

Hyundai Australia has recalled more than 106,000 examples of the 2007-12 i30, over concerns the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners could inadvertently fire. According to the company, "improper programming" of the airbag control unit (ACU) could make the driver and passenger airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners deploy when there's been no accident. If the airbag fires randomly, there's an increased risk of accident for both the driver and other road users.

2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance long-term review: Introduction

It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here! After ordering our Tesla Model 3 back in June when Australian order books opened, we waited patiently until our estimated delivery date of August came around. August came and went, so did September, October and virtually all of November. Yep that should give you a small window into the painful process of ordering a Tesla Model 3.

Toyota rules out HiLux GR or tougher Rugged X, diesel hybrid more likely

Toyota Australia has all but ruled out a HiLux GR – or an even tougher version of the flagship Rugged X – to compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor, but it is warming customers to the idea of a diesel hybrid future. Toyota Australia vice president, sales and marketing, Sean Hanley, said that while customers might be interested in a high-performance HiLux, there are no plans for such a vehicle.

Takata airbag crisis worsens: 78,000 cars off the road in Australia’s biggest automotive buy back

The Takata airbag crisis has taken its most serious turn yet, with to up 78,000 cars to be put off the road and bought back by manufacturers at an estimated cost of up to $200 million. Popular cars made by Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Toyota – sold from 1996 to 2000 – are believed to be equipped with another type of Takata airbag inflator which can also become unstable over time and spray shrapnel when deployed in a crash.

Toyota: ‘hydrogen cars are ready, we’re just waiting for refuelling points’

Japanese car giant Toyota says Australia is “perfectly placed” to adopt hydrogen cars, but the lack of refuelling points is holding back the technology. Toyota and Hyundai already produce showroom-ready hydrogen cars but can’t sell them to the public in Australia because there is nowhere to refuel them.

Western Australian drivers to be left in the dark on speed camera locations

Watch out West Australians, the chances of getting pinged at one of the state’s 1800 speed camera locations just increased exponentially. From the start of 2020, the West Australian Government will scrap the regular updates it provides to the public on exactly where the police have installed mobile speed cameras on any given day. It was a helpful service, allowing alert motorists to navigate the state’s road network without fear of getting busted by a camera.

REVIEW: 2020 MINI Clubman and Countryman John Cooper Works | JCW power!

More power is always good, right? Scott Collie was at the Australian Launch to find out.

2020 Audi RS Q8 review

Absurd: (adjective) wildly unreasonable or illogical. That’s the first word that pops into my head when I stomp on the accelerator of the all-new 2020 Audi RS Q8 – the rush of speed combined with the sound of hell itself – an absurdity in today’s automotive world. Y’see, SUVs of this size, this heft, just aren’t supposed to drive like this, react like that, propel you like the wind in full battle cry towards a horizon that comes at you faster than you can blink, or can think.

Audi to buy back 4000 cars in Australia due to faulty Takata airbags

Audi will become the second car company in Australia to buy back vehicles fitted with potentially deadly Takata airbags – and customers won't be allowed to keep their cars because Audi does not plan to develop airbag replacements for vehicles so old. Audi has calculated that it is cheaper to buy back the vehicles rather than engineer and test replacement airbags.

Toyota Tundra V8 pick-up all but ruled out for Australia

The mighty Toyota Tundra V8 pick-up from the US is unlikely to make it to Australia with this generation’s model – or the next – even though the company refuses to formally rule it out. The Toyota Tundra is a rival to the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado in North America – where it is made – but is built in left-hand drive only.

New Cars: 2019 New Car Calendar - the December update

We said it in 2017, and in 2018, and we can safely say it again: last year was a big one for new model reveals, and 2019 has so far proven to be just as big. With new-car sales numbers looking likely to fall short of a record effort in 2019, the 60-or-so brands operating in Australia will be hoping their latest offerings – those launched so far this year, and those still to come in 2020 – inspire more interest among local buyers.

Toyota HiLux DPF faults fixed, company claims, as it urges more customers to come forward

Toyota Australia insists it has solved the diesel particulate filter dramas that saw thousands of HiLux utes blow thick clouds of white smoke in traffic – but it has urged more customers to come forward if their vehicles are still experiencing symptoms. Toyota diesel particulate filter (DPF) faults affect approximately 250,000 examples of the HiLux ute and Prado and Fortuner four-wheel drives equipped with a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine manufactured from 2015 to 2018.

Next Mini Clubman could become a crossover

The next-generation Mini Clubman could grow up, literally, to become the brand's second crossover model. Oliver Heilmer, Mini's head of design, hinted as much in an interview with Autocar. The move to a range with two crossover models is being driven by the US market, where the current Countryman's slow sales are being blamed on its small size.

2019 Kia Sorento GT-Line long-term review: City driving

Despite being an all-wheel-drive SUV, and having that alluring ‘4x4 Lock’ button near the gearstick, buyers of this Kia Sorento will more than likely spend 99 (or more) per cent of their time in the city. That's certainly been the case for our long-term Sorento, which has been getting shared around the CarAdvice office on a variety of urban assaults. The vehicle in question is the range-topping 2019 Kia Sorento GT-Line diesel, which has an asking price of $58,990 plus on-road costs.

The truth about Toyota Hybrid delays: Corolla, Camry and RAV4

Toyota Australia says reports of 12-month delays on certain hybrid models are greatly exaggerated, and most cars on the waiting list will be delivered in less than half that time. CarAdvice readers have claimed some Toyota dealers are quoting delivery times of up to a year on certain Toyota hybrid models.

The Sponsored by MG The number of SUVs available on the Australian market, in all shapes and sizes, is growing – and showing no signs of slowing down. Given the range of options out there, you could be forgiven for thinking a compact SUV like the MG ZS would be a little too cosy to serve as a family car. While you could look at the new MG HS as a more capacious offering, you shouldn't be too quick to rule out the smaller ZS.

The Imagine by Kia concept (below), unveiled at this year's Geneva motor show in March, featured Kia badges using an identical font.

2019 Toyota HiAce review: LWB petrol auto

We know that the 2019 Toyota HiAce is the best version of Australia’s most popular van that’s ever been available. However, if you still want the power leader, you have to go for the petrol, which is what we’re looking at here.

Morgan to end production of models with steel ladder frame platform

Morgan will cease manufacturing models based on its traditional steel ladder frame chassis, which dates back to 1936. This decision sees the imminent demise of the 4/4, Plus 4 and V6 Roadster, although no firm end date has been set for the 84-year old platform. The automaker claims it will be the long-lived chassis "a fitting send off", but has yet to provide any details. Reports indicate the company is planning at least one special edition model based on an outgoing vehicle.

What you are looking at here is the 2020 BMW X1 LCI in xDrive25i format. If you’re wondering what LCI stands for (I was), it’s ‘Life Cycle Impulse’ – BMW fancy talk for a midlife update. This ‘impulse’ brings a refreshed look for the X1, with a larger grille and redesigned air inlets and fog lights up front. At the rear, it’s been tweaked as well. New tail-lights, along with a redesigned skirt around the exhaust. On this xDrive25i, those two exhaust tips are the genuine article. Nice.

2020 Mini Countryman JCW review

Mini has given the Countryman John Cooper Works (JCW) a significant boost for 2020. Along with the usual trim, styling and interior updates, the 2.0-litre engine under the bonnet has been boosted by 55kW and 100Nm. The result is an SUV with 225kW and 450Nm put to all four wheels through a front-biased all-wheel-drive system and a mechanical-locking front differential. Pricing starts at $65,900 before on-road costs, making this the most expensive model in the Countryman and Clubman ranges.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 review

You don’t need to cast your mind back far to a time when performance cars were built to rev, and even some affordable ones had tacho red zones that now seem impossible in these turbocharged times. Vale: Holden Commodore, 1978-2020

This week, Holden officially broke the news that many suspected was years in the making: the iconic Commodore will be axed in late 2020, alongside the Astra hatch. In a little over 12 months, one of Australia’s most popular cars will disappear from showrooms, with approximately 2.4 million cars sold. Over the last 42 years, one nameplate has implanted itself in the collective heart of the nation and become a cultural icon that’s seen vast political and societal change.

Rural Australia ready for hybrid technology in utes and 4WDs, says Toyota

A Tesla Cybertruck might still be science fiction but Toyota says there is already strong customer demand in regional Australia for hybrid pick-ups and four-wheel drives. The Japanese car company embarked on a “hybrid cavalcade” tour of rural Australia to preach the benefits of electric-car tech and have potential buyers sample a range of vehicles. However, it was Toyota who was taught a lesson after discovering hybrid technology is already widely used in farm machinery.

Automotive Industry Insights podcast: Farewell to the Commodore

On this week's podcast are Mandy Turner, Paul Maric, and Scott Collie. We share our memories of the Holden Commodore, and listen to a commercial compilation of each Commodore model over its 41-year life. According to a study, Australian interest in electric vehicles is well below the global average, and we speak to Natasha Santha, principal at L.E.K. Consulting about why. We chat with Jez Spinks about his review of the 2020 BMW M135i.

Toyota Supra online sales to end as dealers secure more cars

Toyota Supra fans won’t need to wait in an online queue for much longer if they want to buy the Japanese sports-car. Toyota will phase out the online ordering system for the Supra early next year and let dealers handle all pricing and sales enquiries after the company was able to secure more models for 2020. Approximately 350 Supras were allocated to Australia this year, with some more added along the way.

2021 Mercedes-Benz EQA spied

Now the petrol-powered GLA has officially been revealed, Mercedes-Benz has released a camouflaged all-electric EQA SUV mule into the wilds of snowy Europe. Built on the same MFA II underpinnings as the A-Class, B-Class, GLA, GLB, and CLA variants, the EQA is expected to offer an electric range nudging 500km when it lobs in 2021. Externally, the EQA looks nearly identical to the GLA released earlier this week.

BMW owners "entirely content" with three-year warranty

BMW Australia currently has no plans to extend its current three-year warranty. The brand is instead planning to refine its service and dealer experience, following in the footsteps of its rivals at Mercedes-Benz – which earlier this year ruled out a longer warranty and placed focus on customer service – and the long-term customer satisfaction kings at Lexus.

Ferrari EV pencilled in for after 2025

Louis Camilleri, the sports car maker's CEO, has poured cold water on the idea of an electric Ferrari, at least in the short term. Speaking to media outlets, including Reuters, Camilleri said, "My sense is the electric [model] will come out after 2025". The key factor holding back an electric prancing horse is "battery technology is not where it should be yet", which means there are "significant issues in terms of autonomy, [and] in terms of speed of recharging".

2020 Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior review

The Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior is more than just a tough-looking ute, it’s a sign of the times. You can see our raging appetite for double-cab pick-ups just from sitting in traffic. But there is a new trend emerging. We’ve officially entered the era of the mega ute. While it is fair to say boys have been lifting the suspension and adding bullbars to their toys since the invention of the shovel, the difference now is car makers themselves are getting in on the act.

2020 Skoda Rapid revealed in Russia

Alex Misoyannis • It's being phased out in Australia at the moment, but the Skoda Rapid lives on in emerging markets like Russia – where it remains a strong seller. For that reason, the Czech brand has opted to subject its small car to a major facelift for 2020. Big changes have been made to the styling to bring the ageing Rapid in line with Skoda’s newer models.

REVIEW: 2020 Nissan Navara Warrior

The Nissan Navara Warrior is the right vehicle at the right price for buyers who want a big brash ute on a relative budget.

REVIEW: 2020 Honda Accord

Today it’s the Civic, HR-V and CR-V that drive the majority of Honda’s sales here, making the new 2020 Honda Accord more of a halo car. But it's a pretty decent one. We'd appreciate the US market's 2.0-litre turbo and 10-speed auto drivetrain, a better opening price, and a plusher ride, but the great fuel economy, mostly comfortable cabin, excellent driver-assistance tech, and head-turning lines mean there are still reasons to consider this oft-overlooked offering.

2020 Honda Accord review

The Accord nameplate is one of Honda's most storied, with nine previous generations of car dating back to the mid-1970s. Now it's time for an entirely new model to pick up the baton. But where once this was a staple model for the brand, the public appetite for big sedans today is at its nadir. Honda's sales targets for this car are so conservative that they render it a niche player at best, one that it hopes will appeal to previous Accord owners first, foremost, and perhaps solely.

2020 Mini Clubman JCW review

We're used to mid-life tweaks bringing an extra 5kW, or 10kW if we're lucky. That isn't the case with the new 2020 Mini Clubman JCW. Rather than the usual token boost, the new Clubman JCW has 55kW and 100Nm more than the car it replaces. It also has a new one-size-fits-all 'Pure' model, which is essentially Mini with no options. No, that isn't a typo. It's a Mini with no options. As mid-life updates go, this is a significant one – and the base price has only risen by $1000.

REVIEW: 2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe

Porsche's Cayenne Coupe has hit local hot-mix. But which of the fresh-face three-tier range is our pick of fast SUV pack?

2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe review

The first-ever Porsche Cayenne Coupe is everything the wagon version is and isn’t, if with a different roofline. Be it technically or experientially. That’ll either be a good or a bad thing, depending on personal perspective.

2018 Peugeot 5008 recalled

Peugeot has recalled the 2018 5008 SUV, over concerns the spare wheel could work loose and fall off the car. According to the company, the spare wheel mountings might not have been tightened to specification, creating a risk the spare wheel will work loose and fall off. 2020 Ferrari SF90 priced from $846,888 in Australia

Ferrari's range-topping plug-in hybrid supercar, the SF90 Stradale, has arrived in Australia bearing an $846,888 drive-away price. Unlike LaFerrari, the SF90 Stradale is a Ferrari hybrid you can actually buy. It's technically a 'range' model, so you don't need a garage full of classic cars from the Prancing Horse to secure a build slot. "Anyone can come and buy an SF90," said Peter Sutton, Ferrari Australasia sales manager.

Daewoo founder passes away

Kim Woo-Choong, the founder of the Daewoo group, has died of pneumonia aged 82 after a long fight against chronic ailments. Kim was born in 1936 in the city Daegu, in what was then a colony of imperial Japan. Kim's father was reportedly a teacher and mentor to future president and military strongman Park Chung-hee, and later a provincial governor.

BMW to add wireless Android Auto from mid-2020

Android Auto is coming to BMW vehicles from July 2020, but availability will be limited a small number of phone models. A BMW spokesperson confirmed only the wireless form of Android Auto will be offered, meaning BMW's implementation is only compatible, at this stage, with a small selection of high-end Android phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 to S10+, Note 8 to 10, and the Google Pixel range.

Lynk & Co 05 revealed

Upstart Chinese brand Lynk & Co has unveiled its fourth model, the 05. It’s an SUV that measures 4592mm long and 1879mm wide with a 2734mm wheelbase, so roughly the size of a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V. Where it differs from those established SUVs is in its styling. Featuring a rakish coupe SUV silhouette, it’s reminiscent of the much more expensive Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and BMW X4.

BMW 3 Series: An origin story

Sponsored by BMW For 45 years, the BMW 3 Series has been a fixture of the automotive landscape. Throughseven generations, the rear-drive sports sedan set the benchmark, and now, with the all new G20 3 Series, the benchmark has been raised. But to understand where the 2020 BMW 3 Series came from, we have to wind the clockback to where it all started, with the BMW E21 3 Series. Launched in 1975, the E21 was available only as a 2-door coupe and hard-frame cabriolet.

Honda Australia considers dropping Jazz

Honda Australia has conceded it might have to stop selling the Jazz once the current model’s production run ends, because cheap city cars are becoming almost impossible to make profit from, and sales are falling against more popular (and lucrative) small SUVs anyway. The company this week said it would continue to sell stocks of the now-previous-generation Jazz model in Australia throughout 2020, but what comes next remains a matter of discussion.

Jeep aiming to be 'greenest SUV brand' by 2022

It's a lofty claim, but Jeep is adamant it can become 'the greenest SUV brand in the world' by 2022 – by adding electrification to all models across its portfolio. The bold claim was made to Australian journalists by Jeep global president Christian Meunier at the launch of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator in New Zealand.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV review

The 2019 HILDA (Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia) survey found that the average Australian was spending around 4.5 hours per week commuting to and from work: 27 minutes each way, Monday to Friday. If that sounds like you, and you drive to and from work each day, then this 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV might just be the perfect electric vehicle for you.

REVIEW: 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

REVIEW: 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S electric car

Josh travels to Finland for a first drive in the all-electric Porsche Taycan 4S. Is this a worthy Tesla Model S rival?

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S review

Porsche has gone to the ends of the earth to establish the performance credentials of its first ever electric car, from Death Valley to the Arctic Circle. The flagship Porsche Taycan Turbo S has already demonstrated its exotic supercar performance: 0 to 100kmh in 2.8 seconds, incredibly close to the 2.5-second Bugatti Chiron, the world’s fastest car. What we have here is the cheapest model in the range, the Porsche Taycan 4S.

Why the Holden Commodore's days were numbered

The axing of the Holden Commodore is news to everyone except those inside the car industry: the numbers don't lie. When sales are going south and there’s no hope in sight, the end is only a matter of time. The imported Commodore may have had a stay of execution if the company that builds it was still owned by Holden's US parent company General Motors.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA sketched and teased ahead of debut

2020 BMW 4 Series shows its snout in new spy photos

Alex Misoyannis • BMW’s new 2020 4 Series coupe has been spied testing on public roads with even less camouflage than before. The lighter camouflage is concentrated up front, where a new mesh over the grille confirms the news we all knew was coming: the new 4er will receive the controversial, nostril-like grilles from the Concept 4 revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

2020 Audi RS5 coupe and Sportback facelift unveiled

The updated Audi RS5 coupe and Sportback have been revealed sporting a few minor design updates to bring it in line with A5 coupe and liftback. As before, the RS5 models have wheel arches that are 40mm wider than on regular A5 and S5 models.

Interview: Gordon Murray on T50, “the last analogue supercar”

Probably the biggest problem with the Gordon Murray Automotive T50 is getting your head around it. The uninspirational name doesn’t really help; Murray gives all of his projects ‘T’ numbers and the 50 denotes that this is the one that celebrates the fact he has now been doing this for more than five decades.

Jeep Gladiator: Diesel engine still not confirmed for Australia

The dual-cab ute segment is going to get another contender when the 2020 Jeep Gladiator lands locally by the middle of next year, but the picture remains unclear on pricing – and now a diesel engine looks unlikely. The big Jeep won't have off-road bragging rights all to itself either, now that the Ranger Raptor has a firm foothold and with the release of Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior imminent. However, there is no other dual cab available as a convertible.

Goodbye Commodore: A legend dies as Holden goes exclusive on SUVs and utes

As exclusively reported by CarAdvice's Joshua Dowling last week, the Commodore will be dropped from the Holden line-up at the end of 2020. It will be joined by the Astra. The company has confirmed it will continue to sell Commodore (including the revealed facelift) and Astra variants through 2020, "albeit with diminishing model availability as part of an orderly runout". The MY20 Commodore is available to fleet buyers right now.

Tesla Cybertruck to launch in Tri Motor form first

2020 McLaren 620R revealed

Alex Misoyannis • Reckon the McLaren 600LT is still too soft for you? McLaren has come to the rescue with the debut of the 620R, a road-legal version of its 570S GT4 race car. Mounted behind the passengers is the same 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine used by the core line-up and ‘regular’ GT4 car, though the lack of racing regulations mean it’s allowed to produce a stonking 456kW of power – or 620PS, thus its name – and 620Nm of torque. (Two reasons to call it a 620R...)

A total of 24 cars are affected – a VIN list is attached here.

Fiat 124 Spider future in doubt – report

In a move that doesn’t bode well for the future of the Fiat 124 Spider, the Mazda MX-5-based drop-top has been dropped from Fiat’s European range. That includes its sportier Abarth 124 Spider counterpart, the only 124 variant offered here. What distinguished the car the most from its Mazda MX-5 twin – the 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged four-cylinder engine – is what appears to have done the 124 in.

It might look like an ordinary Mercedes-Benz wagon but this model is not available to the general public and has almost twice as much power as the showroom version.

2019 Suzuki Baleno GL review

The Suzuki Baleno first launched in Australia three years ago, and unfortunately for the Japanese brand it hasn't quite been the sales hit that its Swift stablemate has been. In the ever-competitive light car segment, the Baleno is up against big (little) players like the Honda Jazz, Kia Rio, Mazda 2, Toyota Yaris, the Volkswagen Polo, and of course its aforementioned Swift sibling.

More powerful base engine coming for Genesis G70 - report

If you want to go up against established rivals, you have to offer more. Genesis understands that, its G70 outgunning similarly-priced Germans. Sometime in the next couple of years, it’s planning to introduce a new entry-level engine that will further surpass those rivals’ base engines. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS review

It’s hard to use the term 'bargain' to describe any car set to cost $144,600 before on-road costs. Yet consider this: the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS450 shares all of the core structure and most of the trick dynamic componentry of the forthcoming Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 – a car you can bet will cost more than twice as much.

Volkswagen appoints former Rolls-Royce and BMW chief designer

Jozef Kaban, the former head of design for Rolls-Royce, BMW and Skoda, has been appointed as the chief designer for the Volkswagen brand. Kaban will begin his new job on July 1, 2020, presumably because of a non-compete clause in his contract with the BMW Group, where he worked from early 2017 until October this year. The first Mercedes-Benz fully electric vehicle (EV) to be sold in Australia has arrived. It's called the EQC and is targeted at the Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model X, and imminent Audi e-tron. But since its $137,900 list price bisects the petrol-fired $109,000 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 and $161,000 GLC 63S performance crossovers, it's safe to say Benz also wants to convert some existing owners who just want the top-level SUV of this size.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 review

Motoring press love to mock ‘coupe SUVs’ no matter how popular they become. In seeking to be both sports car and family car, they are prone to offer undercooked takes on both. But vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Porsche Cayenne Coupe and BMW X6 – the last of which started the trend – are desirable to people because they’re out-of-the-box. Literally.
