Renault Sport looking at softer variants and SUVs
The new Renault Megane RS280 might be an easier car to daily drive than its hard-riding predecessor, but it still looks and feels special on road and on track. In the hot-hatch world, it’s always been a bit of a left-field choice amongst bigger sellers like the Golf GTI/R, and as such has never really hit big sales numbers. The same is still true, according to Jean Calcat, international sales general manager at Renault Sport.

2018 Volkswagen Polo 70TSI Trendline auto review
Cheap and cheerful. It’s a well-worn cliché thrown about with abandon when discussing all manner of reasonably priced, pint-sized things. Cars are no different, especially in this light-car segment, where the majority of players come in at under the $25K mark and a healthy smattering under the psychological $20K barrier.

2018 Holden Calais 2.0T v Toyota Camry SL Hybrid comparison
Comparing a Holden Commodore/Calais and Toyota Camry would have been incongruous until this year, when both entered new lives as imports. Now it seems perfectly natural to pit this front-drive pair against one another, despite a few differences in design and execution. It's the German-made Calais hatchback with turbocharged petrol engine versus the Japanese Camry sedan with petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain.

2019 Mercedes-Benz C-Class review
The refreshed C-Class is no revolution, but few facelifts are. It should suffice to keep the popular mid-sizer atop the charts though, because it hasn’t ‘fixed’ anything that wasn’t broken, and has only added to what was already an enduringly popular package. It’s time to finally put to bed the notion of American cars as heavy, imprecise, blunt instruments only good for a quarter mile at a time. Nissan Navara ST Black Edition review: Driving Margaret River
This latest Black edition is based on the ST, but it really stands out. And, in a sea of dual-cab utes, it’s hard to imagine why anyone wouldn’t choose the Black Edition when looking at utes at this price point. I really like the look of it. It has a tough stance on road and more capability off it, which is exactly where it is aimed.

It seems like new Nurburgring records crop up weekly, and the whole caper can get a bit fatiguing. Vaughn Gittin Jr, drifter and certified madman, has managed to circumvent that fatigue with his smokey, sideways lap of the legendary 'Green Hell'. Central to the attempt was a supercharged Mustang GT, putting around 671kW to the rear wheels. The rims are wrapped in road-legal Nitto tyres, although we'd suggest they weren't road-legal after a lap at full noise...
Holden Colorado Z71 Xtreme: Going to Extremes
Adam Morris: The goal for Holden’s engineering team was for the heavily accessorised Xtreme to feel and drive like it wasn’t. And it has succeeded. The Xtreme doesn’t feel heavy or cumbersome to drive in the way some aftermarket accessorised 4WDs can, and as previously mentioned, besides the extra wind noise above 60km/h, on road, there is very little difference between the standard Z71 and the Xtreme.
I drove a Mercedes to Monza, to watch Mercedes win
I've a confession, although it's not exactly a secret: I'm not really into motorsport. It's a fact that perplexes and even vexes my colleagues. What kind of motoring journo doesn't get up at 3am for the F1? Well, me, for one. (There are others, too, but I won't name and shame.) Still, I've been to my share of races, and while I can't name every bloke on the grid, I wouldn't say I've ever been bored.
2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4door 63 S review: First drive

We got an up-close-and-personal look at the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door 63 S at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, and while it looked like a seriously quick bit of kit even on its static stand, nothing prepares you for just how potent this luxury express really is.

I know, I know – you’re probably looking at the 2019 McLaren 600 ‘Longtail’ thinking, well, this McLaren’s rump doesn’t look especially long compared with most other road-going stablemates. So, further, what gives? Fair questions, too, given that the 600LT, as it’s officially named, will lob in Oz for around $455,000 list, some $60K pricier than the 570S that, while having a slightly smaller bum, shares three-quarters of its technical make-up with the newcomer.

Can you handbrake turn with an e-parking brake?

(Editor's note: more often than not, an appearance in the Australian government website is a shoo-in for market launch.)

Audi RS4 v Porsche 911 GTS drag race - video
Central to the appeal of the Audi RS4 Avant is the fact it offers sports car performance with a usable, practical boot. Just how much of sports car is it compared to, say, a Porsche 911 GTS though? The team at CarWow endeavoured to find out. With twin-turbo, six-cylinder engines (and Volkswagen Group backing) the RS4 and 911 have a little bit in common. They also both make 331kW of power, although the Audi channels it to all four wheels. Which is quicker? We won't spoil the result.
2019 Ford Mustang GT Fastback review
Even Ford must have been a little surprised by how successful the Mustang has been in Australia since its market launch at the start of 2016. Our market’s taste for bellowing muscle cars is famous, and the Pony Car tapped into this with vigour. To date, it’s found almost 20,000 local buyers, and regularly commanded market share in the sub-$80,000 sports car segment of 50 per cent.

Is low-range dead?
Hardcore 4WDers are going to hate me for this, and I brace for the incoming tsunami of ‘you’re an imbecile’ comments, but this piece isn’t about what I want or don’t want. It’s about what the manufacturers are foisting upon us whether we might like it or not.

2018 Skoda Octavia Sport Wagon 110TSI review
Underrated. Underappreciated. Under the radar. Historically, a Skoda Octavia review has never been complete without these words or phrases. Yet it seems medium-car buyers in Australia are getting the message. Up to the end of July 2018, the Octavia was outselling its Volkswagen cousin, the Passat, as well as the likes of the Subaru Liberty, Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata.

What causes exhaust snap, crackle and pop?
You’ve probably heard it before: that pop and crackle in the exhaust note of a performance car. A number of manufacturers produce cars with bi-modal exhausts allowing the driver to select what kind of noise they’d like their car to produce, and often the louder, sportier noise includes an armada of racy cracks on the overrun.

The automotive name of thrones: Revival of the fittest
Cars can play a big part in our lives. As kids on family road trips, back seats turned into torture chambers at the hands of merciless siblings, but as we emerged into adulthood our cars became an open ticket to freedom. Oh, and the back seat moved from a place of misery to one of unbridled joy – but that’s a different story.

2018 Jaguar E-Type Zero review: Retro electro
The car industry seems to be spending an increasing amount of effort doing irrational things these days. On the face of it, few of those are further off the reservation than the idea of expensively removing the soul-defining six-cylinder engine from an early E-Type, and replacing it with an almost entirely silent electric powertrain.

Can we all just bloody agree on names for active safety tech already?
One of the best things about today’s automotive industry is the improved vehicle safety. Cars aren’t just infinitely better in a crash, they’re also becoming increasingly proficient at helping you avoid them altogether. But unceasing advancement can come at the cost of clarity. In a market so congested, keeping pace with who offers what is difficult, to put it mildly. Especially when it’s all covered with an obscurantist veneer.

2019 Bentley Continental GT review
The crew from Crewe (England) has pulled out all the stops in its quest to make the 2019 Bentley Continental GT coupe the “best grand tourer in the world”. Unlike the second-generation version, which could be seen as something of a facelift of the 2003 original, this third gen really is all new in the broad strokes and heavily revised in the details, even if its somewhat familiar appearance at a cursory glance suggests otherwise.

2019 Audi RS5 Sportback pricing and specs
The Audi Sport range in Australia is expanding from February next year, with the addition of a new RS5 Sportback derivative. This longer-wheelbase model joins its coupe sibling atop the A5 range, adding an extra pair of doors and a wagon-esque boot. In some ways it’s a slicker but almost-as-practical take on the RS4 Avant, right? Apparently designers drew inspiration from the racing details of the bonkers '70s era Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 review
Don’t tell anyone at General Motors, but the eighth-generation Chevrolet Silverado doesn’t look, you know, radically different from the company’s seventh-generation pickup. Or the sixth-generation Silverado, for that matter. Yes, there’s a bold new grille design (four of them, actually), and the body panels have lost some of the outgoing model’s aggressive rectilinearity. And, yes, truck customers already like the way their trucks look.

The front offset test also uncovered a risk of deformity around the front door pillars.

The third generation of Porsche Cayenne has introduced more changes under the skin for the large SUV than the restrained remodelling of its exterior facade suggests. Some automotive nameplates transcend boundaries, blur lines, and change perceptions. Others aren’t so lucky – especially those cars hapless enough to be unceremoniously bridled with the badges of a rival brand. Collaborative efforts are a cost-effective way of lowering development costs and shoring up a car’s chance of success, particularly where low volumes or uncertain market forecasts might mean the alternative is no car at all.

Quit your whining about a lack of soul and don’t waste your time with a sad lament about the end of the V8 engine. The 2018 Audi RS4 Avant is a clinical performance weapon that flies under the radar – until it blows the radar to bits, that is.

The new Volkswagen Up! GTI has been hailed as something of a spiritual successor to the Mk1 or Mk2 Golf GTI. It's light, makes a similar amount of power and, unlike the Polo and Golf GTI in Australia, is offered with a manual transmission. Which is faster, though? With 86kW on tap from a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, the performance Up! isn't exactly a powerhouse, making it a much better rival for the 86kW Mk2 GTI than a modern Golf. Progress, huh.

What it means to the genre is almost immeasurable.

2019 Renault Megane RS v Civic Type R and Focus RS: Hot hatch encore!
Well, you asked for it. When we ran our last hot hatch comparison, Renault had rudely not yet launched its new Megane RS in Australia. So, we had to leave it out, and we wound up with winners in the Honda Civic Type R and the Ford Focus RS. But now the Megane RS is here... can it dethrone our heroes? We went back to the track to find out.
2019 Renault Megane RS v Ford Focus RS v Honda Civic Type R comparison
Does the perfect hot hatch exist? Is your perfect hot hatch someone else's nightmare ride? The latter scenario is probably more likely, but to put the theory to the test, we’ve pitted the all-new Renault Megane RS280 against the reigning champs from our recent hot hatch mega test. Here to form a welcoming committee for the new Frenchy stand our mega test runner-up, the Ford Focus RS, and the supreme champion from that bout, the Honda Civic Type R.
2019 Renault Megane RS review
Ever since French carmaker Renault launched its first-generation Megane RS in 2004, it’s been the go-to hot hatch for performance-bent purists with an eye for flair. Not only was it hugely distinctive, polarising even, but it brought with it a whole new level of dynamics not yet seen in the segment. It was a proper race-bred chassis with a tonne of character and huge ability to boot.

2019 Mazda MX-5 pricing and specs
Mazda has rolled out its 2019 MX-5 updates, adding a more powerful 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine, reach-adjustable steering column, and standard reverse camera as star attractions for the iconic roadster range. The MX-5 line-up has been revised with the the majority of 1.5-litre models struck from the Australian range, leaving only the entry-level Roadster with the smaller engine.
2019 Mazda MX-5 review
Mazda is adamant it builds only the purest sports cars, for only the purest of purists. The company takes a hard line on that attitude any time questions are raised of the MX-5. Questions on more power are met with a stern ‘that would dilute the purity’, and any mention of greater comfort is rebuked with a simple reminder of ‘maintaining purity’. It’s pretty clear the evolution of the world’s best selling two-seat sports car is only ever going to be slow and steady.
2019 Kia ProCeed unveiled
The new Kia ProCeed has been revealed ahead of its in-the-flesh debut at the 2018 Paris motor show at the beginning of October. With buyers deserting three-door hatchbacks in favour of five-door models or crossovers, the new ProCeed not only ditches the previous car's torturous Pro_Cee'd name, but adopts a rakish, but still practical five-door shooting brake body.

Geely, a blueprint to superpower status
I do not profess to be any kind of authority on China’s automotive industry. My recent trip to Beijing left my mouth agape at the sheer scale of… everything. But I am a follower of the car business in a more general sense, especially the pervasive trends of consolidation, influence peddling, and shared capital expenditure. Not to mention the current trade war...
2019 BMW X4 review
SUV, SAV, SAC... There are plenty of labels for the BMW X4. It'd be easy to label it a niche player, a compromised quasi-coupe, quasi-crossover Quasimodo, but even smaller SUV lines are a now big deal, both for BMW and the wider Australian market.
Toyota Prius recalled
Toyota has recalled the current-generation Prius, over concerns about the engine wire harness. According to the company, the harness connected to the Power Control Unit could come into contact with the connector cover and wear over time, creating the risk of an electrical short. If the issue generates enough heat, there's a risk of fire. A total of 795 cars are included in the campaign – a VIN list is attached here.
Ford Ranger Raptor debuts in Supercars recovery trim
The big new Ford Ranger Raptor has made its debut in racetrack form today, ahead of this weekend's Sandown 500 event in Victoria. Of course, when we say racetrack, we don't mean it'll be competing. The Ranger Raptor is no Superutes contender (at least not yet), but rather the Supercars series' official new recovery vehicle.
2020 BMW 4 Series Convertible spied again
The 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible has been snapped again, this time getting out and about without a car carrier obscuring its new soft top. That's right, there's no complex folding hard-top here. BMW has taken the same approach with the Z4, changing tack from its predecessor and re-embracing the soft-top life, while the 8 Series cabriolet is expected to wear a fabric hat as well.

Tesla has narrowed its selection of paint colours on offer from seven to five, in an attempt to streamline manufacturing processes. Previously offered as a $2100 option, Obsidian Black Metallic and Silver Metallic will now cost $2800 in Australia and be considered "off-menu, limited edition" colours. The decision is a global one, not just for our market.

2019 Ferrari Portofino review
Ferrari’s latest money-making venture comes in the form of the all-new Portofino, which effectively replaces the California model as the newest entry-level offering from the house of the Prancing Horse. The Ferrari California, launched in 2008, easily became the Italian carmaker’s most successful model ever. That was due in no small part to its lower price bracket compared with its more powerful stablemates, which in turn attracted many first-time buyers to the brand.
2019 Ferrari Portofino review: First drive
Here it is, Ferrari's impressive new California T replacement, the Portofino. If you want one, get in line. The Portofino is sold out for 2018, while 2019 doesn’t look much better for those lucky enough to be on the waitlist at all.
Tesla freeing up battery capacity for potential hurricane victims
Tesla will free up any software-locked battery capacity in cars owned by people in Hurricane Florence's path, thanks to its over-the-air update system. Although it's not offered anymore, the company at one point sold a Model S 60. The cheapest variant shared its battery with the 75kWh car, with the extra 25 per cent battery power locked only through software.
2019 Subaru BRZ revealed for Japan
Subaru Japan has revealed a 'partially improved' 2019 BRZ for its domestic market, with minor aerodynamic and suspension revisions. Shown here in STI Sport trim, the updated sports car gets new 'rear arch fins' which the company claim "suppress the turbulence of air at the rear of the body to the rear wheel arch" (mind you, this is translating the Japanese press release), along with retuned dampers for improved handling.

2019 Toyota Corolla SX Hybrid review
I have a confession to make. I've always thought the Toyota Corolla was a boring car that people bought if they didn't know much about cars. Not that it's a bad vehicle. In fact, it's always been rather good. But like most Toyota models of years past, the Corolla covered most bases adequately, but never stood out in any one area.

2019 Lexus UX review
Luxury Japanese carmaker Lexus has launched an all-new compact SUV it's calling the UX (short for Urban Crossover), but it's late to the party that already includes a host of high-tech European models with significant traction in the market. Audi has the Q2 it launched a couple of years ago, while BMW has both the X1 and its sportier sibling badged X2. British brand Jaguar competes with the E-Pace, and Swedish manufacturer Volvo recently launched its much lauded XC40.

2019 BMW X5 v 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE
The quicker-than-usual development cycle for the fourth-generation BMW X5, and somewhat tardy arrival of the new Mercedes-Benz GLE, have combined to make their respective arrivals almost coalesce. Of course, we wouldn't dare determine which of these US-made luxury SUVs is superior without a proper comparison test, which we'll do as soon as both arrive on local shores: November this year for the BMW, and April/May next year for the Benz.
