The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is the new king of the ‘Ring, lapping the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in 6 minutes 47.3 seconds.
Not only is it the fastest 911 of all time, the GT2 RS is also the quickest production vehicle around the ‘Ring – some five seconds quicker than the Lamborghini Huracan Performante (6 minutes 52.01 seconds) and a whole 10 seconds quicker than Porsche’s own manic 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar (6 minutes 57 seconds).
However, it still doesn’t match Lanzante Motorsport’s McLaren P1 LM prototype, which completed a 6-minute 43.2-second run – though the P1 LM is a street-legal conversion of the track-only P1 GTR.
According to the company’s press release, Porsche set out with a target of 7 minutes and 5 seconds for its hottest 911, though on the first attempt Lars Kern from Germany and Nick Tandy broke the Lamborghini’s record, and completed five laps each under 6 minutes 50 seconds.
Following the initial run, Kern went on to ultimately set the record time on September 20. The vehicle’s average speed on the record lap was 184.11km/h.
Lars Kern is a Porsche test driver who regularly competes in the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nürburgring, meaning he knows the circuit inside and out.
The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat six, pumping out a massive 515kW of power and 750Nm of torque. Drive is sent exclusively to the rear wheels via a special seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.
Despite the absence of all-wheel traction, the 911 GT2 RS sprints from 0-100km/h in just 2.8 seconds (claimed) on its way to a top speed of 340km/h.
The news comes after Porsche’s vice president of motorsport, Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, boldly claimed the 911 GT2 RS is “no seven on the Nürburgring“, and that if and when the company took its flagship to the famous circuit, it would be done using factory-spec engines and tyres because he’s “not going for lap times that the customer cannot achieve” – a subtle dig at numerous manufacturers who have claimed record lap times with racing tyres and stripped-out versions of production models.
