A third Chinese car giant has joined the battle to sell Australia’s most affordable new electric vehicle – but only for a limited time.
Sharp discounts for the New Year have seen the title of Australia’s cheapest new electric car change hands for the third time in six months.
The GWM Ora Standard Range electric hatchback from China is now priced from $36,638 to $39,003 drive-away – cheaper than the previous most affordable electric car, the BYD Dolphin Dynamic, which is priced from $39,556 to $41,758 drive-away.
There are two caveats – the new price applies only to run-out 2023 model-year stock, not newly-built 2024 models, and is a limited-time offer valid until 31 March 2024.
The offer applies a reduction of $4000 to the RRP – $39,990 plus on-road costs, or about $40,600 to $43,000 drive-away – which was cut by $4000 when the first cars arrived in showrooms in July last year, compared to the $43,990 RRP originally announced.
More expensive Extended Range, Ultra and GT models in the Ora range – a hatchback similarly sized to a Hyundai i30 – have received the same limited-time $4000 discount.
It is the latest development in a price war between three of China’s largest car makers – MG, BYD and GWM – which are undercutting each other for the title of Australia’s most affordable electric vehicle.
The GWM Ora Standard Range was Australia’s most affordable electric vehicle at its original $43,990 plus on-road costs price announced in February 2023 until it was undercut by the similarly-sized MG 4 Excite 51 at $38,990 plus on-road costs (now $39,990).
Three days later it was pipped again by the BYD Dolphin Dynamic hatch, priced from $38,890 on-road costs – a $100 difference the local distributor for BYD cars still claims is a coincidence, as prices were “locked in months [prior].”
GWM announced price cuts of $2000 to $4000 for the Ora range two weeks later, but with an entry price of $39,990 plus on-road costs it could not reclaim its title of the country’s most affordable electric car.
In Queensland – one of the few remaining Australian states and territories to offer rebates for new electric-vehicle purchases – the Ora Standard Range is available for $31,550 drive-away, thanks to a $6000 government incentive.
2023 GWM Ora Australian offer pricing
GWM advertises a $4000 discount, which has been applied to the recommended retail prices. However, compared to drive-away prices advertised in July 2023, there have been changes in on-road costs in certain states – for example, in Tasmania – that mean the offer prices are not $4000 cheaper. Drive has contacted GWM for further details.
