Volkswagen previews new entry-level electric SUV

Production of a new Volkswagen electric city SUV tipped to replace the petrol T-Cross is due to commence in 2026.

Volkswagen has previewed a new entry-level, electric SUV planned for launch in 2026 in a darkened image issued to the media.

A sister model to the ID.2 hatchback previewed in concept-car guise in March, the new high-riding Volkswagen model is set to replace the existing petrol T-Cross in the line-up, at a price expected to start at about €30,000 ($AU49,000) when it goes on sale in selected markets later this decade.

The compact electric SUV teased by Volkswagen boasts an angular design with an upright glasshouse, thin headlamps, large wheelhouses, short overhangs and a distinctive rear pillar treatment with three feature lines.

Inside, it is expected to be identical to the ID.2 hatchback in terms of dashboard architecture, with 10-inch instrument and 12.9-inch infotainment displays together with physical controls for the audio and air-conditioning functions.

The new five-seat model is planned to be based on Volkswagen’s MEB Entry electric-car platform, which will also underpin the ID.2 hatchback and other city-sized Volkswagen Group electric models, including the Cupra Raval.

It is slated to offer the choice of 38kWh or 58kWh batteries, with the potential for up to 450km of claimed driving range on a single charge as well as charging at up to 125kW on a DC fast charger.

Production of the new model – which may be named ‘ID.2X’ – is planned to take place alongside other MEB Entry platform-based models in Martorell, Spain, at a factory run by VW Group-owned car maker Seat.
