Alongside the brand’s first electric vehicle concept, an alternative interior layout for the latest LandCruiser Prado was also shown in the set of previously-unseen design proposals.
Toyota has unveiled another set of historic concepts to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Calty design studio in California.
In October 2023, the design centre – which leads the styling of Toyota’s US-market pick-ups, and contributes to global models such as the Supra – gave fans a look behind the curtain of its operations, revealing, among other vehicles, a set of experimental mid-engined sports cars.
For its most recent release, Calty has put a spotlight on some of the more modern concepts that never saw the light of day.
These include a high-speed performance vehicle, Toyota’s first electric vehicle, and an 86 ‘Shooting Brake’ wagon concept.
According to Toyota, Calty was asked to see how much further it could take the platform under the Toyota 86 – initially sold in the US as the Scion FR-S.
The project reportedly also explored how an all-wheel-drive system could be implemented alongside the Subaru-derived 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.
Created in 2012, this study resulted in a shooting brake named the X86D, with four doors and a rear hatch claimed to have a “hot rod-like appearance” when viewed from the rear.
Another Calty concept released by Toyota is named the “Future High Performance Concept”, created in 1989.
To achieve peak performance, this vehicle featured an engine that could extend upwards from within the vehicle, reportedly to improve cooling.
Fitted with tri-spoke wheels and transparent body panels, Toyota notes this concept’s design was on the more “radical” side.
To show Toyota Motor Corporation what an electric vehicle could look like, Calty also produced a two-door hatchback.
According to Toyota, this concept was never officially named but was produced before the Prius launched in 1997.
It made use of tall, skinny wheels and a sleek profile which reportedly maximised aerodynamics and energy efficiency.
Finally, although it wasn’t included in the same release from Toyota, Calty recently posted an image on its Instagram account of an alternative interior for the latest LandCruiser Prado (see second image in the gallery above).
This army green-coloured interior looks to take inspiration from the interior of the FJ Cruiser, and is a lot more utilitarian than what is seen in the production vehicle.
