The most powerful road-going Hyundai ever built is due to go motor racing in a one-make championship in South Korea next year.
The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N – the most powerful road-going Hyundai ever, and the company’s first high-performance electric car – is planned to spawn a one-make racing championship in South Korea next year.
According to information published on social media, the racing version will be known as the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup, and is due for unveiling in February 2024 before the first race starts in May 2024.
Information and images shown during a Hyundai customer event in South Korea reveal the eN1 Cup will be wider than its showroom counterpart, with more aggressive bumpers, a tall rear spoiler, and what appear to be centre-lock motorsport wheels.
The eN1 Cup is reportedly 200kg to 250kg lighter than the road-going Ioniq 5 N, but even with this reduction, the racer will still be weigh approximately two tonnes due to its large, heavy battery.
The weight saving is reportedly drawn from the use of polycarbonate side and rear windows, as well as stripping out the interior and removing the rear seats, fitting an FIA-approved six-point roll cage in its place.
A set of 18-inch wheels will be paired with slick racing tyres which measure 280mm wide at each corner.
Six-piston brake calipers will feature on the front axle, whilst the rear axle makes use of four-piston calipers.
Adjustable racing suspension is planned to lower the race car’s ride height by 50mm to 70mm. It will also get an air jack system, which allows pit crews to easily lift the vehicle up using an air compressor during pit stops to change the tyres.
It was reported the eN1 Cup will get a special set of artificial driving sounds – branded N Active Sound+ by Hyundai – which will reportedly be able to be customised by the race teams.
There is no word on if the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup receives more power than the road car’s 478kW and 740Nm dual electric motors, which sending power to all four wheels.
This allows the road-going Hyundai Ioniq 5 N to hit 100km/h from a standing start in a claimed 3.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 260km/h.
According to reports, Hyundai is planning to finish development of the Ioniq 5 N eN1 in February 2024, when it is expected to be unveiled in full – before it forms the basis of a single-make racing series in South Korea in May 2024.
