Most drivers haven’t thought about their learner’s test since completing it in their teens, but how much do you remember?
Most drivers take their learner’s test as teenagers and apply the knowledge they’ve gained through repetition once they’re on the roads.
The provisional licence test in Australia covers everything from fundamental road signs to complex driving scenarios.

While some motorists have special conditions on their licence requiring regular fitness-to-drive assessments, most drivers won’t ever have their road knowledge tested after obtaining their licence.
However, with a rise in road-related deaths on Australian roads in the past couple of years, retesting driver knowledge could soon be mandatory in some Australian states and territories.
If you think you’re a competent or above-average driver, it’s time to put your driving knowledge to the test. Can you pass your Ls if you were forced to take the test today? These are 10 of the hardest questions Drive found on Vic Roads.

ANSWERS
Question 1: You are driving towards another vehicle at night. How close are you allowed to get to the other vehicle before you must ‘dip’ your headlights?
Answer: C) 200 metres. While headlights enable you to see further, you may temporarily prevent the oncoming driver from seeing the road at night. You must also ‘dip’ your headlights when you’re 200 metres behind another vehicle.
Question 2: You are driving vehicle A. Which vehicles must you give way to?
Answer: A) Both vehicles B and C. Both vehicles A and B must give way to C – however, straight-line traffic takes priority over turning traffic, so vehicle B must give way to vehicle A once vehicle C has moved through the intersection.
Question 3: How should you drive out of a bend in the road?
Answer: A) Accelerate a little. VicRoads advises motorists to enter the bend slowly but accelerate gently as you come out of the curve.
Question 4: You are in a vehicle waiting for a passenger who will get off a bus at a bus stop. Where is it best to wait?
Answer: B) Position II. You must not leave a vehicle stationary within 20 metres of the approaching side of a bus and 10 metres of the departing side.
Question 5: What is the correct order for the pedestrian and the vehicles to go across the intersection?
Answer: C) Vehicle A, then the pedestrian, then vehicle B. Generally, straight-line traffic takes priority, so vehicle A must be the first to cross the intersection and vehicle B must give way to the pedestrian before turning.
Question 6: You are carrying a pregnant passenger in your vehicle. You should make sure that the lower part of her seat belt is sitting…
Answer: B) Below the baby bump (Position B). The seatbelt must be properly fastened and the lap part of the belt adjusted across the hips of a pregnant woman and below the baby.
Question 7: The road ahead is clear for both vehicle A and vehicle B. Is overtaking allowed?
Answer: A) Only for vehicle A. Overtaking is only permitted if the broken line is on the left side of the continuous line on the road.
Question 8: Which vehicle should cross the intersection first?
Answer: B) Vehicle B. Motorists must always give way to the right, meaning Vehicle A must wait for vehicle C to move, while vehicle C must ensure vehicle B has crossed the intersection before moving.
Question 9: You are only allowed to cross over these double yellow lines when…
Answer: C) You have to avoid an obstruction. Tramways are in constant operation and yellow double lines must not be crossed unless there is an obstruction – drivers can cross where there are breaks designed to permit the cars to cross the tram line.
Question 10: You are driving vehicle A. When can you complete a hook turn?
Answer: C) When the traffic lights in the road you are entering turn green. For a fully-comprehensive guide on how to perform a hook turn safely, visit the Drive website.
