Someone has fitted a high-performance Honda engine to an old Toyota Corolla

An iconic Toyota Corolla from the 1980s has had an unlikely engine swap with one of Honda’s most popular sports cars.

An old 1985 Toyota Corolla fitted with a high-performance Honda engine has sold for $US21,750 ($AU33,800) at an auction in the US.

Better known as the Corolla Sprinter in Australia, the unique vehicle previously listed for sale by Bring a Trailer is equipped with a motor and six-speed transmission from a popular Honda convertible, the high-revving S2000.

As reported by US publication CarBuzz, the exterior modifications include pop-up headlights, a single exhaust tip, carbon-look mirror caps, smoked driving lights and taillight lenses just to name a few.

The vehicle was advertised with 122,000 miles (196,339km), and the seller reportedly covered 2000 miles (3218km) while they owned it.

Inside, the vehicle shows a Honda S2000 start button, reupholstered black cloth bucket seats, a leather steering wheel cover, and a vertical emergency brake handle.

According to the listing, the rear seat, heater, and air conditioning unit have been removed, a sound-proofing material has been placed throughout the inside of the Corolla and the car’s battery has been moved behind the front seats.

The seller reported metal repair and weld reinforcement were done on the car’s body before the vehicle was repainted in white, while the windshield was replaced in preparation for the sale.

Toyota has previously unveiled an electric and hydrogen concept version of the classic AE86 Corolla coupé, hinting at the Japanese car giant’s possible plans to keep classic models on the roads in the modern zero-emissions era, according to previous Drive reports.
