The US equivalent of the Toyota HiLux has received a retro-designed makeover.
A retro reskin of the Toyota Tacoma pick-up – the US equivalent of the Toyota HiLux – has launched in North America, with a hefty price tag.
The new package comprises an old-school Toyota LandCruiser-inspired grille, “nostalgic” panelling, round headlights, black and chrome steel bumpers, and a pallet of classic paint options.
A host of extras including racks, lift kits, side steps, fog lights, rearview cameras, wheels, reupholstered seats, sound system upgrades, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are also offered.
Built by Toyota customiser Flex in San Diego, the “Renoca Windansea” overhaul launched in the US last month and, for now, is exclusive to third-generation 2016 to 2017 Toyota Tacoma.
Prices start from $US52,800 ($AU83,000). That’s about double the drive-away cost of the Toyota Tacoma pick-up in the US when it was new. A wait time of two- to five-months is estimated and the revamp is exclusive to customers in North America for now.
In TRD Sport guise, the vehicle is powered by a 3.5-litre petrol V6. This sends 207kW/359Nm to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Flex also offers a range of other retro overhauls for modern Toyota off-roaders. Other base models include the 100 Series LandCruiser, 80 Series, and LX450.
The market for classic cars fitted with new technology – also known as “resto-mods” – has exploded in recent years. Overhauled versions of the Ford Bronco, Mini, Porsche 911 and 928, Citroen DS, and Volvo P1800, and Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA are also offered.
