2024 BMW 5 Series wagon leaks in patent application

Leaked images of BMW’s upcoming long-roof 5 Series have appeared online, ahead of the model’s unveiling later this year. But it may not come to Australia.

The 2024 BMW 5 Series Touring has been revealed to the world through a patent application.

However it remains to be seen if it comes to Australia, given the outgoing 5 Series wagon was culled for private buyers in 2020, and remained available only for fleets and police forces, including Victoria.

Images of the 5 Series wagon appeared on the Instagram account Kurdistan Automotive Blog, ahead of BMW’s official unveiling expected in the coming months.

The wagon predictably adopts a similar look to its sedan sibling, with horizontal upswept tail-lights and a subtle, less-pronounced ‘Hofmeister kink’ where the rear-side glass meets the rear window pillar.

The company previously confirmed the wagon would be added to the line-up, showing off teasers of the high-performance M5 model in a long-roof body back in June 2023 (below).

While the latest M5 will be the first to be available as a wagon since the V10-powered ‘E61’ which ended production in 2010 – this time reportedly with a twin-turbo V8 with plug-in hybrid technology – it’s expected the 5 Series Touring will be available with more family-friendly engine options.

In July 2023, BMW Australia confirmed the 5 Series sedan would be available with just one petrol engine for the time being – the 520i, powered by a 153kW/330Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine – alongside the electric i5 eDrive40 with 250kW and 430Nm, and the range-topping i5 M60 with 442kW and 820Nm.

However, an online insider known only as ‘ynguldyn’ has revealed BMW will add a 540d xDrive to the 5 Series range, with the 235kW/680Nm 3.0-litre turbo-diesel six-cylinder engine to be made available in both sedan and wagon – with the advantage of all-wheel-drive grip.

The 540d xDrive wagon is expected to be a top candidate for Highway Patrol units across Australia, given the popularity of the outgoing 530d wagon in a number of police fleets.

The 2024 BMW 5 Series Touring is expected to be unveiled by the German car-maker in the coming months.
