Volkswagen Amarok Core V6 diesel could make a comeback

The two cheapest models in the new Volkswagen Amarok line-up now come with single-turbo or twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines – but the turbo-diesel V6 could return as an option.

Volkswagen Australia says it has not ruled out a return of turbo-diesel V6 (TDV6) power to the two cheapest models in its range – after launching with a choice of single-turbo or twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines.

However, such a move could be years rather than months away.

A month after launching a trio of top-end models, the two cheapest variants in the new Volkswagen Amarok line-up – the Core and Life – have started arriving in local showrooms.

The Core comes with a single-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel paired to a six-speed automatic, while the Life comes with a twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel paired to a 10-speed auto.

As previously reported, they are the same engines and gearboxes – and the same power outputs – as the equivalent Ford Ranger models on which the new Volkswagen Amarok is based.

For now, as with the new Ford Ranger line-up, the (Ford-sourced) TDV6 is only available on the three most expensive models in the new Volkswagen Amarok range.

However, Volkswagen Australia says it is already looking at a return of the TDV6 to the lower grades – some time down the track.

When asked about the likelihood of a return to TDV6 power on more affordable versions of the Volkswagen Amarok range, a company representative responded:

“It’s something that we’re definitely looking at long term,” said Ben Triebels, product manager for Volkswagen Australia commercial vehicles.

“We’re always looking at the range and going ‘okay, this is where we’re going to start it off’.

“We know that V6 Core was such a huge success in the old model, and it’s something that we are working towards 100 per cent (for the new model).”
