Video: World’s smallest V8 is made from Lego

The creator of this tiny Lego V8 engine claims it can rev up to almost 4500rpm – and it sounds better than you’d expect.

The title of building the smallest V8 engine in the world has been claimed by a Lego fan on YouTube, who used a combination of the Danish toys and 3D-printed parts to make a miniature masterpiece.

In a video uploaded to YouTube, user ‘ShaunSchafGames43’ claims his homemade engine is the smallest operational V8 in the world – even if it can’t produce enough power to move a real car.

A mix of cylinders and pistons from Lego’s range of mini engines plus a custom crankshaft and valve system were used in the V8’s construction, allowing it to rev up to 4350rpm – about the same range where the Ford Mustang’s V8 makes peak torque.

The engine is operated pneumatically through the use of pressurised air, while the size and weight of the wheels attached to the crankshaft mimic a flywheel by dictating how quickly the V8 can gain or lose revs.

Unfortunately there are no details regarding the exact capacity of the engine, though it appears to be significantly smaller than the Ferrari 208 GT4’s 2.0-litre V8 – the smallest production V8 ever made.

This mini V8 engine is an example of how Lego has evolved from a bunch of technicolour blocks which haunt playrooms into one of the most sought-after products for adults to remake the vehicles of their dreams.

Lego has released numerous licenced kits for big and small builders since the start of 2022, from its McLaren Formula One car, a Back to the Future spec DeLorean, the Nissan Skyline GT-R from 2Fast 2Furious, the classic Land Rover Defender 90 and even Peugeot’s new 9X8 Le Mans racer.
