Hyundai’s luxury division Genesis is poised to join the growing list of car-makers with a large, coupe-shaped SUV.
Hyundai’s luxury offshoot Genesis has unveiled a concept version of the GV80 Coupe – a thinly-disguised display model that foreshadows showroom arrivals later this year or some time in 2024.
The South Korean car giant has confirmed the Genesis GV80 Coupe will go into production but has for now not outlined timing, pricing, or technical details.
However, the sleeker version of the regular Genesis GV80 SUV – priced from $100,000 to $120,000 in Australia – is most likely to mirror the four variants of its sibling model.
That would entail a choice of 2.5-litre turbo petrol power with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, a 3.0-litre turbo diesel inline six-cylinder with all-wheel drive, and a flagship 3.5-litre twin turbo V6 all-wheel-drive edition.
The new Genesis GV80 variant would join other coupe-like SUVs from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.
Notably, the colour scheme of the concept car in the promotional images appears to have been inspired by the Porsche Cayenne Coupe.
However, a quote attributed to the head of design, Luc Donckerwolke, in the company’s media statement said: “The colour symbolises the self-confident and passionate attitude of Korea.”
In addition to the sloping rear roofline, it is unclear what other changes to the bodywork – such as the more aggressive front bumper with extra cooling, and bold light signatures in the front fenders and across the tailgate – will make it onto the showroom version.
The concept car is a four-seater only, however the production model could adopt a five-seat layout.
Prototypes of the Genesis GV80 Coupe have already been caught on camera while testing overseas, indicating showroom arrivals could be late this year or some time next year.
But the vehicle has been on cards since at least 2021, when a scale model of what appeared to be a Genesis GV80 Coupe was spotted on a shelf in the background of a video filmed in the Genesis design studio.
