Volvo’s most opulent SUV puts the ‘EX’ in Excellence, with four seats, a fridge and electric power for chauffeur-driven Chinese buyers. And it is under evaluation for Australia.
Chinese-owned Swedish car brand Volvo has unveiled one of its most luxurious vehicles to date, the 2024 Volvo EX90 Excellence electric SUV, at this year’s Shanghai motor show – but Australian arrivals are yet to be confirmed.
The Excellence is the four-seat version of Volvo’s battery-powered replacement for the XC90 seven-seat SUV, the EX90 – aimed primarily at chauffeur-driven customers in China.
It is the second generation of the Excellence badge on a Volvo SUV, after it was applied to a four-seat luxury version of the XC90 in 2016, with four-cylinder plug-in hybrid power.
While the original XC90 Excellence came to Australia, a local showroom arrival for the EX90 Excellence is yet to be locked in – alongside, or after the standard EX90 reaches Australian showrooms in late 2024.

“As with all of our model introductions we will consider and evaluate as to how it fits in to the local market. For now we have not finalised our (decision),” a Volvo Car Australia spokesperson told Drive.
On sale in China first, the EX90 Excellence swaps the standard car’s seven-seat, three-row configuration for just four seats, including two individual rear ‘captain’s chairs’, with three-stage heating, five-stage massaging, soft pillows, and likely power adjustment
Rear-seat passengers are treated to a centre console with natural wood trim and a touch buttons to control the seats, plus a fridge big enough for “a large bottle”, and three different interior fragrances controlled by an Orrefors crystal switch.

Other upgrades include “mood” lighting in the cabin, and a Bowers & Wilkins High-Fidelity surround sound system with speakers in the rear headrests, and Dolby Atmos technology.
The EX90 Excellence’s seats are available in tailored wool blend “certified according to strict sustainability standards”, or Nordico fabric made from recycled plastic bottles and “bio-attributed material from forests in Sweden and Finland”, Volvo says.
Exterior tweaks are limited to two-tone paint and new 22-inch alloy wheels.

There is no mention of mechanical changes for the Excellence, meaning it is expected to retain dual electric motors and a 111kWh battery for outputs of up to 380kW and 910Nm.
Driving range is rated at up to 600 kilometres in European WLTP laboratory testing, or 650km according to more lenient Chinese CLTC testing protocols.
The 2024 Volvo EX90 Excellence is expected to go on sale in China later this year, or early next year. Australian and European showroom arrivals are yet to be announced.
