2020-2022 Isuzu D-Max and MU-X recalled due to steering failure

Isuzu’s D-Max ute and MU-X SUV twins have been recalled after a manufacturing defect was found to cause a loss of steering.

Isuzu Ute Australia has recalled 15,542 examples of its 2020-2022 Isuzu D-Max and MU-X twins, after a manufacturing defect could lead to a complete loss of steering.

The affected D-Max utes and MU-X SUVs were built by Isuzu in Thailand between June 2020 and October 2022 .

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a manufacturing issue, the lower steering shaft attaching bolt may have a torque value lower than the required specification.

“Over time, the lower steering shaft attaching bolt may lose tension causing it to dislodge.

“If the steering shaft bolt dislodges whilst operating the vehicle, it will cause a loss of steering. This may increase the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to the driver, occupants and other road users.”

Between the start of 2020 and the end of 2022, Isuzu reported 64,515 D-Maxs and 28,654 MU-Xs as sold in Australia.

A spokesperson for Isuzu told Drive the affected vehicles were assembled along a specific production line, explaining why the recall covers approximately 24 per cent of the D-Max and MU-X vehicles sold across the period.

According to Isuzu, there have been no reported incidents in Australia or overseas related to the fault.

Isuzu Ute Australia has advised owners of affected vehicles to contact their nearest authorised dealer to schedule an appointment to confirm the tension of the lower steering shaft attaching bolt is at the correct torque specification, free of charge.
