2024 SsangYong Torres on track for Australia, electric version on the cards

SsangYong’s first new model in five years is due in Australia in nine to 12 months from now in petrol form, though an electric model could follow.

An electric version of the new 2024 SsangYong Torres SUV could follow the petrol version – due late this year or early next year – into Australian showrooms.

As what will be SsangYong’s first new model introduced to Australia under new ownership – after two years on financial life support in South Korea – the Torres is a mid-size SUV with the footprint of a Toyota RAV4.

The company indicated at the car’s unveiling last year a likely Australian arrival date of late 2023 for the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol version.

With SsangYong’s acquisition by South Korean chemical and steel company KG Group now finalised, the company has confirmed the petrol Torres is “on track” for Australian showrooms in late 2023 or early 2024, pending any delays.

The electric Torres EVX unveiled last week is “on the radar” for Australia, a SsangYong Australia spokesperson told Drive. The company’s first electric vehicle, the Korando e-Motion, is also in discussion for Australia, the brand says.

Power in petrol Torres SUVs is expected to come from a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 125kW and 280Nm, a six-speed automatic gearbox, and front- or all-wheel drive.

Details of the electric model are yet to be revealed, though it is slated to use battery technology from Chinese electric-car giant BYD.
