New spy photos captured in China provide our first glimpse of Polestar’s rival for the Tesla Model Y and Porsche Macan.
The 2024 Polestar 4 electric car – a potential rival to the Tesla Model Y SUV – has been spotted on Chinese roads ahead of Australian showroom arrivals next year.
Images published on Chinese social media websites (via Autospy) show Polestar’s fourth model will be styled closer to a hatchback or high-riding liftback sedan, rather than the traditional SUV body style it will be pitched as within the company’s showrooms.
The Polestar 4’s shape matches preview images of the model under a cover published last year, with a sloping roofline that’s not much taller than a traditional sedan, and passenger car-like ground clearance.
The outlines of two-piece headlights similar to those of the Polestar Precept concept car are visible through the camouflage, along with an angular front bumper design that’s also similar to the concept.
Due to be unveiled this year – ahead of Australian showroom arrivals next year – the Polestar 4 is expected to sit below the Polestar 3 SUV, rivalling cars such as the Tesla Model Y, Genesis GV60, Kia EV6, upcoming Audi Q6 E-Tron, among others.
Reports out of China claim the Polestar 4 will be underpinned by a derivative of Chinese parent company Geely’s SEA electric-car platform – shared with upcoming Volvos – with the option of dual electric motors and 600km of claimed driving range.
However, Polestar is yet to confirm this – and the car could instead use the ‘SPA2’ electric platform beneath the larger Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90 SUVs.
The Polestar 4 is expected to slot between the 4606mm-long Polestar 2 and 4900mm-long Polestar 3 in terms of dimensions, closer to the 4751mm-long Tesla Model Y.
Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told the UK’s Car magazine in 2022 the company is aiming to price the Polestar 4 from approximately €55,000 ($AU85,000).
That is more than the €48,990 ($AU75,000) Polestar 2 Standard Range Single Motor, but less than the €88,600 ($AU135,400) Polestar 3 dual-motor – though a sub-€80,000 single-motor version of the Polestar 3 is expected to launch at a later date.
More details of the 2024 Polestar 4 are due closer to its global unveiling expected by the end of this year.
