The updated Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series range gains advanced safety technology – but it is $1600 dearer than before, has been reclassified as a light truck to avoid costly structural upgrades, and order books remain closed.

- Autonomous emergency braking added
- Priced from $69,000 plus on-road costs
The 2023 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series workhorse has received a $1600 price rise to account for the addition of advanced safety technology – and its re-classification as a light truck to sidestep new crash-safety regulations.
But order books remain closed, as they have been since July – and Toyota executives told media in October they are not due to open again for at least six months.
All LandCruiser 70 Series models face $1600 price increases, according to a third-party industry price guide distributed to media this week, accounting for new autonomous emergency braking technology (with pedestrian and cyclist detection).
The gross vehicle mass (GVM) of all variants has increased to 3510kg – which, as reported first by Drive, allows the 70 Series to be classified as a ‘medium goods vehicle’ (light truck), and become exempt from key side-impact crash safety rules now in force in Australia.
These rules (known as ADR 85) only apply to ‘light’ commercial vehicles with a GVM of less than 3500kg – allowing Toyota to increase the vehicle’s GVM to sidestep costly engineering upgrades to improve the LandCruiser’s crash protection.

It is unclear if there have been any suspension or brake upgrades to accompany the revised gross vehicle mass ratings.
Aside from the addition of autonomous emergency braking, standard equipment levels across the range are believed to be unchanged – a full list (adapted from 2022 models) is included at the bottom of this story.
Entry-level GX variants are fitted with 16-inch steel wheels, a 6.1-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, black bumpers and mirrors, two or four speakers, and either two airbags in the wagon, Troop Carrier and dual-cab chassis, or five airbags in the single-cab chassis.
All models carry over a 151kW/430Nm 4.5-litre single-turbo V8 diesel engine, driving all four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
Drive’s estimates in October suggested there are at least 10,000 in the queue for a LandCruiser 70 Series – and Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Sean Hanley told media in October it will be a number of months before orders can be opened again.
“We are trying very hard to increase our production capacity with that car. It is quite unique to our country and we want to satisfy that demand,” said Mr Hanley.
“We have a considerable order bank (but) we still have another year before we clear it … we’ve got to give priority to those customers, hence the reason we’ve taken the action we have.”
