MG Cyberster electric sports car confirmed for Australia

MG Australia is preparing to bring a production variant of its convertible electric sports concept to local roads.

The MG Cyberster electric sports car is on track for Australian showroom arrival when it launches in 2024 or 2025, Drive understands.

The

convertible two-seater broke covet last year in concept guise at the Shanghai motor show with a long tapered nose, futuristic cabin, low-profile tyres, large rear diffuser, and Union Jack-inspired tail lights.

At the time, its Chinese manufacturer claimed a 0-100km/h sprint time of “less than three seconds” and battery range in excess of 800km.

Following the reveal, MG Australia suggested a production version of the model was under consideration for the local market: “As part of our Electric For Everyone strategy, [We] will examine the Cyberster’s potential.”

However, Drive understands plans have developed further since then and specific preparations are now underway for the vehicle to be offered to motorists Down Under.

While thin on specific details, a spokesperson for MG Australia told Drive this week: “We’ve got our hand firmly in the air for this car … it’s something we have in our future line-up.”

The spokesperson noted “it’s too early to discuss price,” and it’s yet to be seen if the vehicle will be pitched as a Porsche competitor or a more affordable sports car aligned with the Mazda MX-5 and Subaru BRZ.

However, it’s unlikely a production variant of the

Cyberster would launch with the class-leading range and power specifications detailed at launch.

Assuming the long-delayed Tesla Roadster is still in the development phase, MG’s new vehicle would launch as one of the first mass-produced convertibles from an existing car maker powered entirely by electricity.
