Aston Martin’s debut SUV has been given a sharper chassis and a significant power boost, making it the most powerful application of its Mercedes-AMG cross-plane V8 engine.
The 2022 Aston Martin DBX707 has been unveiled, as the high-performance, range-topping version of the company’s first SUV.
Previously tipped to wear the DBX S badge, the number in the DBX707’s name refers to what’s under the bonnet: an updated version of the standard model’s 4.0-litre Mercedes-AMG twin-turbocharged V8, retuned by Aston Martin to develop 520kW (707 metric horsepower) and 900Nm – up 46kW and 200Nm.
Those figures make the Aston SUV the most powerful vehicle with AMG’s ‘M178’ V8 engine, eclipsing the 470kW/900Nm of the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S – though it’s short of the 537kW quoted by the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which uses an adapted ‘M178 LS2’ version of the engine.
Power is sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed ‘wet’ multi-clutch automatic transmission (designed to support the increase in torque) and a retuned all-wheel-drive system, now capable of sending up to 100 per cent of the power to the rear axle.
Aston Martin claims a 3.3-second 0-100km/h sprint time – on par with its Porsche and Lamborghini rivals.
Filling the arches are 22- or 23-inch alloy wheels, hiding standard-fit carbon-ceramic brakes which claim to save a total of 40.5kg of unsprung mass, thanks to 420mm front and 390mm rear discs with six-piston calipers.
High-performance brake pads and unique brake booster tuning aid performance under heavy loads, joined by increased brake cooling under the floor and through the front air intake.
Chassis tweaks under the skin include an upgraded tri-chamber air suspension system with unique tuning and new dampers, retuned electric power steering and Electronic Active Roll Control (adjustable anti-roll bar) systems, a new Race Start launch control system in Sport+ and GT Sport modes, and revised all-wheel drive and stability control tuning.
There’s also a new electronic limited-slip rear differential, upgraded to support the DBX707’s increased output, with a shorter final-drive ratio for improved acceleration.
Complementing the mechanical upgrades is a styling overhaul, led by a new front end with a larger satin chrome grille, new air intakes and brake cooling ducts, and horizontal lower daytime-running lights.
Dark satin chrome window surrounds, new bonnet blades, a gloss black splitter and black side skirts all feature, as does a revised rear end with an enlarged roof spoiler, larger diffuser, rear wheel arch vents, and quad exhaust outlets.
Inside, 16-way electric sports seats are standard, available in a choice of three material schemes: Accelerate (leather and Alcantara), Inspire Comfort and Inspire Sport, the latter pair offering semi-aniline leather with Aston Martin wing embroidery and accent elements.
The centre console has been revised with a new drive mode selector, which offers individual buttons for suspension, stability control, manual gear selection and exhaust mode. Buyers can choose from dark chrome, bright chrome or carbon-fibre switchgear.
Production of the 2022 Aston Martin DBX707 will commence by March, ahead of first deliveries in Europe between April and June.
Australian launch timing is yet to be confirmed, though a local arrival within the next 12 months is likely, given the launch dates of past Aston Martin models in Australia.
