A Toyota HiLux towbar hitch has inexplicably detached at freeway speeds in a freak accident in South Australia, striking the windscreen of the following vehicle in the driver’s line of sight.
The shocking footage was uploaded to the Dashcam Owners Australia YouTube page.
The driver of the following vehicle emerged uninjured, after brushing-off fragments of broken glass from the shattered windscreen.
Despite being in shock, the driver was able to bring his vehicle to a halt on the side of the motorway on the south-eastern outskirts of Adelaide.
As this article was published, it is unclear if the Toyota HiLux driver with the missing towbar hitch was aware of the incident that unfolded behind him.
It is also yet to be determined how the towbar hitch (or neck) – with towball attached – became separated from the vehicle’s main towbar assembly.
The only possible explanation is that the locating bolt – that slots through the towbar neck and receiver, locking it into position – may have lost its securing pin.
The owner of the Toyota HiLux could have forgotten to secure it correctly.
Or it could have been the result of foul play, with someone removing the locating bolt as a cruel prank.
The driver who narrowly escaped injury, Michael Allison, told Channel Nine News after the ordeal he “bought a lottery ticket and maybe had a large whiskey last night as well.”
There is no suggestion there is a fault with Toyota HiLux towbar assemblies.
Towing experts told Drive the incident was a timely reminder to ensure owners of vehicles with towbars make sure they check the assembly is properly secured and has not been tampered with before each journey.
