CAR COMPARISONS: Kia Australia increases prices by up to $2000

Prices are up by an average of $1269 drive-away, with the range-topping Kia Sorento, Stinger and Rio variants hit with the greatest increases.

Kia Australia has increased prices across all but two model lines for the new year by between $500 and $2000.

Applicable across all Kia model lines bar the new Sportage and Niro SUVs – with the exception of two limited-edition Rio SX city car variants – and in effect from 1 January, prices have risen by up to $1000 before on-road costs, or $2000 drive-away.

A spokesperson for Kia Australia told Drive: “The increase across the range is due to external factors such as exchange rates and business costs.” No changes have been made to standard specifications or equipment levels.

The full $2000 drive-away price increase has been applied to the range-topping Sorento Plug-in Hybrid seven-seat SUV (less than four months after going on sale) and Stinger GT sports sedan – as well as the Rio GT-Line city car (now $27,990 drive-away), despite competing in one of the market’s most price-conscious segments.

Entry-level S and mid-spec GT-Line variants of the Picanto micro car have increased in price by $300 before on-road costs, or $500 drive-away – while the flagship Picanto GT is up $500 before on-road costs (breaking $20,000 for the first time, at $20,490 plus on-roads) or $1000 drive-away.

The Niro small SUV and new-generation Sportage medium SUV are the only models not to see price rises of any sort – with the drive-away prices offered with the Sportage since launch now removed due to an “alternate pricing strategy” that’s being trialled, according to a spokesperson.
