The family five-seater could be the cheapest electric vehicle offered by General Motors when it goes on sale next year.
General Motors marque Chevrolet has confirmed plans for a low-cost electric spin-off of its Equinox SUV, slated for launch in 2023.
With a projected price of $US30,000 ($AU40,000) in North America, the high-riding five-seater will likely be the automotive giant’s cheapest zero-emission vehicle when it goes on sale – given the smaller Bolt hatchback retails from $US31,000.
While standard LT and sporty RS trims have already been locked in, performance specifications are yet to be revealed.
However, GM says the family vehicle will be underpinned its new Ultium platform, with modular battery pack and motor layouts (click here for more details).
“The Equinox has always played an important role for Chevrolet as the second-highest selling brand nameplate,” said Chevrolet’s vice president Steve Hill.
“Providing an affordable electric option in the industry’s highest volume segment proves Chevy is going to make electric vehicles available to everyone.”
The petrol-powered Equinox was offered in Australia as a Holden for three years, between 2017 the marque’s closure in 2020.
Had the locally-based General Motors subsidiary been retained, this may have been its first electric model.
However, as it stands no Chevrolet SUVs are currently offered to local buyers – with the General Motors Specialty Vehicles local division offering full-size pick-ups and the Corvette sports car only – it’s unlikely the
Equinox will make to showrooms Down Under. No right-hand drive program for the new Equinox EV – or the larger Blazer EV the company will also introduce in 2023 – has been announced.
General Motors currently sells just a small handful of electric models – and delivered just 26 in the US between October and December last year – however has promised to roll-out 30 new battery-powered cars by 2025.
These include the GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq,
Chevrolet Bolt, and recently-revealed electric Silverado EV pick-up.The post Electric Chevrolet Equinox confirmed for the US appeared first on Drive.
