Market leader Toyota is planning another big year, with a fleet of new arrivals – as factories work overtime to meet the surge in demand.
Toyota will introduce at least four important new or updated models this year, starting with its most in-demand passenger vehicle, the Toyota RAV4.
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 represents a mid-life facelift for the popular model – but unfortunately this is unlikely to cut current waiting times, which stretch up to 12 months.
Updates to the Toyota RAV4 are mostly cosmetic – new front lights, restyled alloy wheels, a selection of new interior features, and a revised model line-up that aims to cover more price points.
The changes to the 2022 Toyota RAV4 bring price rises of between $410 and $1585; two models have had a $270 price drop.
Drive went into detail about the 2022 Toyota RAV4 upgrades here. There will still be a mix of petrol and hybrid variants, though demand for hybrid is currently skewed at about 70 per cent (or seven out of every 10 orders).
This is much higher demand for the hybrid than Toyota was expecting, which partly explains why the waiting time has blown out to “11 to 12 months” according to the latest estimates, after delays had briefly been reduced to two to four months.
Semiconductor shortages and an increase in factory worker absenteeism due to COVID mean Toyota is struggling to deliver enough RAV4s around the world, not only in Australia.
The new Toyota Corolla Cross – designed to fit between the Toyota Yaris Cross / Toyota C-HR small SUVs and the mid-size Toyota RAV4 – is due in the second half of this year.
Australian details of the Toyota Corolla Cross are limited – for now – but it is expected to be priced below the Toyota RAV4, and may divert some customers from the Toyota RAV4 waiting list. It will offer a choice of petrol and hybrid power, like its larger sibling.
The other Toyota vehicle with an unusually long waiting list is the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series ute. Waiting times currently stretch to about nine or 10 months, say dealers.
An updated model is due some time before November 2022, when stricter side impact regulations will come into force for commercial vehicles. The deadline for passenger cars passed in November 2021.
The extent of the changes to the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series are yet to be revealed.
The biggest news in the second half of the year is the introduction of the first electric car sold by Toyota in Australia (the BZ4X, pictured at the top of this story), and the arrival of the second-generation Toyota GR86 sports car (pictured below, still twinned with the Subaru BRZ, and now with a bigger, 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine compared to its predecessor’s 2.0-litre).

The above changes or new model introductions are in addition to minor running updates expected to be made to most Toyota models at some point throughout the year.
While we are not expecting huge changes to the Toyota HiLux ute, Toyota Camry sedan, Toyota Kluger family SUV, or Toyota HiAce van, these models may also come in for some minor trim adjustments or price changes.
