After a few years of languishing with older product, Nissan’s 2022 is set to explode with a suite of brand-new generations of key models – including a new sports car.
Nissan Australia’s product teams are going to have a blinder 2022. Following a few years of patiently waiting for new product, the Japanese brand will launch no less than four key brand-new models.
It all kicks off early in the new year with the 2022 Nissan Qashqai small SUV, bringing new turbocharged power, a wide-ranging suite of active safety tech, and advances in standard equipment. No prices have been shared for the new car yet, though we’re expecting a rise considering the larger body, new engine, and extra kit.
All variants (at launch) will be powered by a new 1.3-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine with 110kW and 250Nm outputs. A sole transmission will be available across the board – a continuously variable automatic transmission.
That said, those keen on saving fuel will be keen to know a new E-Power hybrid variant is on the way by the end of the year.
One of the most exciting sports car reveals for 2021 was the next-generation Nissan Z car, and punters will start to see them on Australian roads mid-way through the new year. Headlining the list of new things to get excited about is the new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which is set to send 298kW/475Nm to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or nine-speed ‘conventional’ automatic transmission.
Next up is a new-generation Nissan Pathfinder large SUV. Now nearly a year on since its reveal in the US (February 2021 unveiling), Nissan is slated to launch the Pathfinder some time after July 2022.
While it does carry over its predecessor’s 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, it will come with a new nine-speed automatic transmission, replacing the current model’s CVT. It will come as standard with eight seats in a two-three-three configuration, while the driver and passenger will benefit from a new infotainment system with smartphone mirroring tech.
Rounding out Nissan’s 2022 is the car that’ll likely sell the best of all – the 2022 Nissan X-Trail mid-size SUV. This one comes two years after its international launch and eight years after the launch of its predecessor – so high time for a tech-laden replacement.
Luckily that’s what the 2022 X-Trail promises to be, with a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, quilted leather seats, Bose sound system, and a suite of active safety technologies. Many of these features are shared with the Mitsubishi Outlander, which is underpinned by the same platform.
No prices have been announced for the forthcoming model at the moment, with customers expected to wait until the latter half of the year for further details (and the arrival of the first cars in showrooms).
“[2022] will be a huge 12 months for Nissan, as we undertake an almost brand-wide refresh with the launch of four incredibly exciting and all-new models,” said Nissan Australia managing director Adam Paterson.
