Many of the features on Germany’s new Cupra Leon VZ Cup special edition are slated to be offered on Australian versions of the new hot hatch, due later this year.
Volkswagen-owned Spanish performance car brand Cupra will launch in Australia this July – and the new 2022 Cupra Leon VZ Cup special edition, now on sale in Germany, could preview some of the features offered in the local Leon range.
Based on the range-topping versions of the Leon hot hatch and wagon – Cupra’s small car offering, twinned under the skin with the Volkswagen Golf GTI and R – the VZ Cup special edition is unique to Germany, and adds a number of extras not seen on lesser base and VZ variants.
While the Leon VZ Cup isn’t slated to come to Australia in its exact German-market form, many of the features it offers – technology, luxury, performance and visual additions – are expected to be offered on flagship variants in Australia, once the four-variant local Leon range arrives in July.
Over the VZ grades on which they’re based, the VZ Cup editions add typically-optional 19-inch ‘Exclusive II’ copper and black-finished alloy wheels, new Dark Aluminium side skirts and, on hatch models, an extended carbon-fibre rear roof spoiler – the latter not normally available as an option.
Inside, the Leon VZ Cup gains the Supersport bucket seats from the five-cylinder Formentor VZ5 SUV – items currently not available on any Leon in most European markets – trimmed in black or Petrol Blue leather.
The driver grips an upgraded Supersport flat-bottomed steering wheel with a Cupra drive mode selector, and copper contrasting elements.
Other standard features in the new VZ Cup range-toppers include a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, digital instrument cluster and LED headlights – with optional items including 370mm ventilated Brembo front brakes, a 10-speaker Beats sound system, a sunroof, and carbon-fibre mirror caps.
The VZ Cup equipment level can be had with three of the Leon’s petrol engines: a choice of 221kW/400Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder or 180kW/400Nm 1.4-litre plug-in hybrid options in the hatch, or the flagship 228kW/400Nm turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder in the wagon.
Both hatch variants are front-wheel drive, while the wagon employs 4Drive all-wheel drive. All variants use dual-clutch automatic transmissions, though the plug-in hybrid offers six speeds, compared with seven in the pure petrol variants.
Prices for the 2022 Cupra Leon VZ Cup in Germany range from €46,670 to €48,675 ($AU73,700 to $AU77,000), though should similarly-equipped hatch variants be offered in Australia – as the wagon isn’t bound for local showrooms – expect figures closer to the $60,000 mark.
Drive understands many of the features seen in Germany’s Leon VZ Cup will be offered in Australia, on one or more of the four variants expected on sale in July 2022. Full details of local standard equipment will be announced on February 8.
